Felt is an incredibly popular roofing material amongst DIYers and roofing professionals due to its ease of installation and budget-friendly costs. Felt roofs are most commonly used on shed roofs, garage roofs and other outbuildings, but can also be used on flat roofs such as on small extensions and porches. Before beginning to felt a flat roof, it is important to ensure the roof is stable and able to withstand the weight of someone standing on it. If there are any rotten pieces of timber, these should be replaced before work can begin. Any old or pre-existing flat roof felt should also be removed at this point. 2. Calculate the amount of felt required Cost-Effective:Few roofing materials offer the same combination of performance and affordability, saving on materials and labour. Continue this process until one side of the shed has been completed, and then repeat on the other side. 7. Add a capping sheet

Next, measure the surface of the shed roofing to calculate how much felt you’ll need – don’t forget to add an extra 5-7.5cm for overlaps at the edges and the gables. Generally, if felting a pitched shed roof you’ll require 3 pieces of felt – 1 for each side and then one to overlap the two edges, but this may vary depending on the size of the shed roof and the width of the felt rolls. 3. Lay the first piece of felt Now lay the roofing felt out across the roof, or dry ground, and leave it there for half an hour. Once it’s been rested it should be easier to manipulate and fix into place. 4. Lay the first piece of felt Each tile has a bitumen strip which melts in the heat of the sun securing your shingles. As an option we offer felt shingle glue and this is also recommended by IKO. We recommend bitumen glue is at least used on the ridge tiles and the first leading edge roof tiles.We recommend shingle glue is used especially in the colder months as it takes longer for the bitumen glue to melt. Shingle glue is also highly recommended in very exposed locations. Access to your shed roof is needed to carry out the waterproofing. You’ll need a good ladder or a tall step ladder. Be sure the roof is strong enough to work off when you’re cutting the roofing materials. Katepal’s range of bitumen felt shingles boasts 2 styles and a selection of single colours and blended colours for an authentic tiled finish. Then fit your shingle underlay onto the exposed roof. Ensure that your underlay extends beyond the edges of the roof by around 50mm. The underlay will be applied in strips, with each strip overlapping the previous one by at least 75mm. Then turn down the edges and nail it at 500mm centres. Preparing The Roof For Felt Shingles

Use whole shingle strips for the second and all even-numbered rows to create a staggering effect from 25mm above each cutout and 25mm in from each edge. They are recommending IKO Glass Fibre Underlay 20m (Type 3B). This is similar to a standard roofing felt and if you are choosing to use a membrane we would recommend felt over the IKO membrane. Be aware, when folding the edge pieces and in cold conditions, you may need to warm the material first to make it more supple and pliable.Although single layer felt roofs are available, felt roofing generally uses two or three sheets of modified bitumen felts. This is especially the case for roofs with a pitch below 10°. A three layer system is widely used as it increases the durability of the roof and its resistance to UV radiation. To set the first row of shingles you will need to trim some material from one edge of the shingle strip before fixing them at the eaves. With the square butt shingles, this should be 125mm. Or if using fishscale shingles, trim off 100mm. You’ll need to do this for all odd-numbered rows.
