Still, it was lovely to be back with Simon and his colleagues as they try to stop local thugs using young children to run drugs, and work out if a recent suicide of a teenage girl might have actually been murder. D. James, this newest case is sure to enthrall new fans and surprise old ones in what is a captivating new addition to a highly acclaimed series.

His relationships with women show him in a poor light and it is some question that he is inappropriately dealing with a female Detective Constable. Vulnerable local kids like Brookie and Olivia, whose involvement gives Simon a bitter taste of this new landscape. Her novels include Strange Meeting, I'm the King of the Castle, In the Springtime of the Year and The Mist in the Mirror. Realistic depiction of both the crime and medical issues raised in the story as well as of the daily and bigger issues faced by each of the characters. They are just addicted to their jobs, dedicated to their family and determined to make a difference.

You feel the parental pain and anger for the unscrupulous grooming of the vulnerable young and this part of the plot is both relevant and shockingly gritty. As always, the writing is excellent and the chapters and paragraphs regarding Olivia and her mother were moving and sensitively written. The arrival of a new Simon Serrailler is always a thing of joy, and although this is not the best in the series, it is still a wonderful read.Rachel made another reappearance but it was all so confused and ‘edgy’ that I had no idea what either of them felt for each other and her rapid disappearance from Simon’s life a few books back was never explained. Dark, page-turning, and rich in mood and character, Susan Hill’s AChangeofCircumstance lands brilliantly as another gripping entry to the Serrailler canon, sure to enthrall fans and newcomers alike.

I feel sure that when they started they were crime novels with a bit of the detectives family background. It's always difficult to know what will happen next in the romance department, but at least he gets some joy finding the culprits. Although there’s a police team working alongside Serrailler the main focus in this book is on him and Kieron, although it seems as if DC Denzil Aberra is a very keen and likeable addition to the team.Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Serrailler has long regarded drug ops in Lafferton as a wasteoftime. Not a lot happens, and when it does, the action concerns the drug trade and how suppliers are using young people to do the dirty work. It didn't disappoint and I was soon totally engrossed back in the lives of Simon and Cat and their families. The drug dealing story line is vivid and scary; grief in the wake of divorce and suicide is sensitively and powerfully portrayed; parental concerns and struggles feel genuine (as far as I know - this deliberately child-free reader remains grateful for her wise decision decades ago. I missed whatever backstory there might be with Rachel, but the fact that she is - of course - beautiful, brilliant, successful, and rich is just over the top romance novel stuff.
