The film's motto is voiced by one of the characters: "We're not 20 anymore; but we're not 40 yet either, thank God." (Hey guys - it's really not that bad). In a sanitised upscale Roman suburb that would not look out of place in a TV ice-cream advert, Carlo (Stefano Accorsi, who made his name in a TV ice-cream advert) is getting cold feet. His girlfriend Giulia (rising diva Giovanna Mezzogiorno, who is Accorsi's real-life partner) is pregnant, and Carlo's just met a much younger girl at a party. His male friends are not much help: one already has a kid, and feels trapped; another is driven to distraction by a crumbling relationship and his family's expectation that he will take over his ailing father's religious souvenir business; a third is enviably single. It must be a generational thing. The Last Kiss, a tale of thirtysomething males dithering between responsibility and the open road, is a likeable but fragile film, with little emotional depth. Very much of its time and place, the film is a superficial paean to Muccino's superficial contemporaries: the clean-shaven, financially buoyant, recreational-drug-using, mobile-phone-dependent generation of 30-year-olds which inhabit the smarter suburbs of metropolitan Italy at the beginning of the new millennium. There is a light comic touch about some of the dialogue, but Muccino labours rather too much to create plot mirrors and character contrasts. His story mechanics are in such need of oiling: we can practically hear the cogs squeaking. The actors in L'ultimo bacio give a memorable performance, especially Stefano Accorsi, who is at his charming best as Carlo. Giovanna Mezzogiorno portrays Giulia and brings depth and emotion to the character. Stefania Sandrelli plays Giulia's mother, who's going through her own set of troubles, with great honesty and humor. I've already mentioned the wonderful score, but I would also like to point out another lovely sound in this film... the Italian language. Never before have so many words been crammed into a two hour movie. It is a lovely language to behold. It sounds beautiful whether it is being whispered or screamed. I know it may seem a little meaningless to state such a thing, but I believe that a great film can be enjoyed with either the sound or the picture off. This film assuredly looks gorgeous, but it sounds even better!

The cinematography and lighting are first rate. These stunningly gorgeous Italian thespians are made even more resplendent than previously imaginable. Gabriele Muccino directs the film and seems to make every single shot count. Personalmente ho qualche dubbio sui sequel. Soprattutto per un film come L'ultimo bacio che è rimasto così profondamente radicato nell'immaginario collettivo. Quando mi hanno parlato di un seguito ho avuto subito qualche dubbio. Ma avendo una grandissima stima per Gabriele Muccino ho chiesto di leggere un trattamento del film, perché mi sembra professionale conoscere la storia. Purtroppo quello che ho letto non mi ha convinto: non mi è piaciuto lo sviluppo del mio personaggio» Carlo meets up with a former classmate named Marco, and their conversation triggers deeply buried feelings and memories about youth, passion, and adventure. Marco reveals that he is still living the same carefree life that they used to live, characterized by wild parties, drugs, and one-night stands. Gabriele Muccino's direction ensures that the movie manages to touch the audience's hearts while keeping a light and humorous tone throughout. The director's portrayal of the conflicts within relationships and the societal pressures facing young couples makes L'ultimo bacio a film that feels both realistic and relatable.

A quasi dieci anni dall'uscita del film che ne ha decretato il successo a livello nazionale ed europeo, nella primavera del 2009 sono iniziate le riprese di Baciami ancora, sequel del film. There are many things to love about this film. Giovanna Mezzogiorno's performance is miraculous. The stories are poignantly truthful. The character arcs are rich and full and complete. The technical aspects of the film are immaculate. The resolution is satisfying and honest. You will cringe, you will laugh, you will be joyous and angry... this movie will take you on an emotional roller-coaster. You will almost feel Italian (If you aren't already). And the final few moments of the film will leave you smirking to yourself as you contemplate the resounding irony of it all. How cruel these directors can be! Giulia ( Giovanna Mezzogiorno) and Carlo ( Stefano Accorsi) have been happy together for three years, but Giulia's announcement that she is pregnant sends him into a secret panic. Terrified at his imminent entry into the adult world of irreversible responsibilities, Carlo finds himself tempted by a bewitching 18-year-old girl, Francesca ( Martina Stella), whom he meets by chance at a wedding. The possibility of one last youthful crazy fling before the impending prison of parenthood proves to be too attractive to resist. Carlo becomes more and more frustrated with his mundane existence and begins to question his relationship with Giulia, who is pregnant by now.
