The texture can significantly impact the typing experience, so think about which texture feels most comfortable for your fingers. R4 is an angled bottom row, R5 is flat. You have the option to try both and decide which one you prefer. Why no Ergodox?! MT3 profile keycaps are available in two main materials: PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). PBT keycaps are known for their durability and resistance to fading and shine over time. ABS keycaps, on the other hand, are lighter and more budget-friendly. Massdrop believed in me and invested in this project, but they want it all and they want it now. The drop went live too soon. For the designer is always too soon and at some point you just have to release but my work is far from finished. Dye-sub, or dye sublimation, is a way of printing on PBT keycaps that uses heat and dye to permanently stain the plastic with a color. The legends don’t fade or wear away since the dye colors the plastic itself and aren’t just a layer of paint on top of the plastic. Now that you have a better idea about ABS and PBT, it’s time to talk about the printing and production methods commonly used in keycaps. The two printing methods most widely seen in higher-end keycap sets are double-shot molding and dye-sub printing. As with most other aspects of mechanical keyboards, neither is definitively better than the other. Legends: Consider whether you want legends (letters and symbols) printed on your MT3 keycaps. If you prefer a clean and minimalist appearance, you might lean toward keycaps without legends. However, if you rely on touch typing, keycaps with legends might be more convenient.

Few years ago Topre released the Hi-Pro keyboard which featured a wonderful set of high profile keycaps in a retrolucious beige colorway. I knew it had to be mine! The printing technique used is dye-sublimation, which guarantees sharp and vibrant legends on each keycap. The heavily slanted design and the scooped, contoured tops of each cap recreate the nostalgic typing experience of vintage keyboards. Regrettably I haven’t received the color samples yet so I can’t show you exactly how the keycaps will look like, but the above picture should be close enough.Up to this point was all unicorns and rainbows. We were designing something we loved with the help and input of other enthusiasts. The problem of course was to find a way to turn the dream into reality. Massdrop had to rush the drop and I don’t have yet a sublimation sample. Being the top of the keycap pretty deep the legends could stretch during printing as closer to the edges they get. To prevent possible issues I tried to keep the text in the middle of the key where the deformation is minimal.
