The storyline features The Royalty Protection Command, who are entrusted with the safety of the Royal family, and they’re really going to have their work cut out in ‘Next in Line’, to protect one of their royals in particular. You have to go through all the books in continuity and skipping any one will just make a gap in the story. This time he’s hanging around in Belmarsh Prison thanks to William and Ross Hogan’s work from the previous book.

You may wonder then why I picked this particular book to start with and I guess it was partly because it was set in the world of the Royalty Protection Service and the time of Princess Diana and partly because I knew that I was going to see Jeffrey Archer at Bloody Scotland Crime Festival. It gets quite exciting, but I daresay the real Royal Family may not be too fond of the details (nope, can't explain - you'll just have to read it for yourself). MY THOUGHTS: Archer has crafted yet another cunning plot, with three interwoven threads; one involving a threat to HRH the Princess of Wales. Miles Faulkner and his dodgy legal representative Booth-Watson make a reappearance, as does Faulkner's estranged wife Christine.

Next in Line doesn't disappoint if you're a Jeffrey Archer fan, or even if you are reading him for the first time.He became the youngest member of the House of Commons in 1969, was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party in 1985, and was elevated to the House of Lords in 1992. Maverick ex-undercover operative Ross Hogan is charged with a very sensitive―and unique―responsibility. Mostly very believable situations but there are one or two where you do have to suspend disbelief somewhat but they dont take away from the overall enjoyment of the series.

He won the Prix Relay du Roman d’Évasion, a prize that rewards a novel in which readers can ‘escape from everyday life’, for his novel Paths of Glory, and the Prix Polar International Prize for the best international thriller of the year, for his novel A Prisoner of Birth.

The two storylines are clever with many twists and turns, making for a fascinating and gripping read. I enjoy this series and I like tge way Archer has extended it into new characters, rather than just the feud with Watson and Faulkner.
