Long ago, you see, humans and dragons lived in the same world. But as the dragons recall it, they were betrayed and exiled without cause. The humans, meanwhile, have all but forgotten dragons as real, present beings: instead, in Loc, they worship dragons as gods, the source of their magic, but remember nothing of human-dragon history. The spell connects to Everen, the last male dragon foretold to save his kind, dragging him through the Veil. Disguised as a human, Everen soon learns that to regain his true power and form and fulfil his destiny, he only needs to convince one little thief to trust him enough to bond completel - -body, mind, and soul - and then kill them. Dragonfall has the now familiar structure of a multiple first-person point-of-view novel. Each chapter is told by a single character. There are three main points of view: Everen, Arcady, and Soren. I have not mentioned Soren before. Arcady and Soren have twisty minds, and I enjoyed their points of view a lot. Everen was a little less fun, but I expect him to become more interesting in the next books.

It was different from most of the writing styles I’ve seen through the years. It was fascinating but it was dragging A LOT sometimes that I found myself skimming more than I’d like to admit. There is a thin line between poetic and “get to the point ffs” and this book played jump rope with it.

Their magic is done using something creatively called the Old Tongue, with phrases like, "Ar-réal vanok vaugain." It looks pretty far removed from English. How are they related? An aspect that didn’t quite work for me was the storyline involving Sorin, essentially a warrior acolyte under the thrall of a shadowy individual. I didn’t find her few chapters particularly engaging and thought her storyline just distracted from Everen and Arcady. I also felt her narrative ended in quite a predictable way and perhaps would have been helped by a few more chapters to really flesh out her characterisation.
