When I read that Enid Blyton was one the favorite childhood authors of the likes of Neil Gaiman and Stieg Larsson, and when a British exchange student at my daughter's college exclaimed in surprise when she heard that her American friends had never heard of Enid Blyton, my curiosity was aroused. The Faraway Tree is so tall it reaches into the clouds and up in these clouds a new land swings by (like a rotating turntable of lands) every couple of days. That being said we did spend a week of literacy lessons based upon this book, creating characters we would like to meet, a land we would like to visit and then telling a narrative of what could happen were they themselves to climb the faraway tree and meet their characters.

You could tell that Enid Blyton didn't like naughty children because all the punishments and morals to the stories were brutal. Now these colour short stories offer a great way for young new readers to discover the adventures of Silky, Moon-Face, the Saucepan Man and all of their friends in the Enchanted Wood. I started of trying to read it to my kids but they are still learning the kind of patience needed for sitting still and listening to mommy read.As I got a bit older I used to love reading her other series-The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, The Twins of St Clair's, The Secret Seven, The Children of Cherry Tree Farm and my favourite back then, The Famous Five. but without this author my childhood would have been a sad and lonely place, from her stories for young children the wishing chair and come to the circus, to the fabulous famous five, St. On the way up, they know to avoid Dame Washalot who's always doing her dirty washing, and emptying the water down the tree. Some of the lands are pleasant (like the Land of Take-What-You-Want) and some are not (like the land of Dame Slap's school). Watzisname 'pummelling them as if he were beating carpets' and the Saucepan Man throwing his saucepans at them.

At first, Connie refuses to believe in the Faraway Tree or the magical folk who live in it, even when the Angry Pixie throws ink at her and when Dame Washalot soaks her. But moving around to the illustrations there's a couple of weird ones here, for some reasons I was always sure that Beth was the one with the brown hair and Frannie with the blonde but when they are in the Land of Enchantments it's the blonde haired child that's drawn stuck in the fairy ring though the story says that Beth was the one that got stuck. An entrance is eventually effected by using a type of enlarged caterpillar to chew down through the tree and out through the roots into the cave. They befriend many of the residents and have adventures in magical lands that visit the top of the tree.
