Golden Light on Barrio Logan. Sony A6400, Sony 18-135mm at 26mm, f/11 (for a sunstar) hand-held at 1/5 at Auto ISO 200, Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution. The rear LCD is tiny. It's a short 16:9 shape, so images don't fill the screen unless cropped or zoomed (or if you're shooting video). Use the top dial to swap among images while zoomed, and if viewing through the finder, touch the rear LCD to scroll around a zoomed image. This lens does a pretty good job, especially for the price! I did use this lens on my Sony a7RIII a few times (it covers the full frame for a portion of the focal length, about 12-17mm).

Short 18mm flange focal distance allows better lens designs than DSLRs do —the same advantage rangefinder cameras have.The size and weight of a camera can be an important consideration for photographers who plan to travel or carry their camera with them for extended periods of time.

Key Features

While I encourage everyone to start with prime lenses when they are learning photography, eventually it is nice to have a mid-range zoom. That said, I’d choose tougher and sharper over lightweight in almost every case. If you’re looking for a do-all, high-quality prime lens for your Sony a6400, the Sony 24mm f/1.8 is it. This camera will once again be a favorite for all types of video makers due to its brilliant oversampled 4K video recording at 30 fps and 1080p at 120 fps. The a6400 is one of Sonys first cameras with the option to record in HLG (Hybrid log Gamma) so you can shoot HDR ready footage directly from the camera. Once again the S log2 and S log3 give you the freedom of professional color grading and post production for more vibrant results in video. The touchscreen allows to focus by touch and the hybrid autofocus does a good job of keeping the subject in the limelight. Body At f/2.8, this lens was moderately fast and could handle darker scenes, especially when paired with a good low light sensor like the one in the Sony a6400. If you need a faster aperture, the newer f/1.8 version reviewed here is a good option. Both cameras also feature a high-resolution viewfinder, which can provide a clear and detailed view of the scene.

However, because it’s so light, I think it would survive a drop quite well, even without much metal in the design!Because I shoot both weddings and adventure sports, I like to have a wide range of lenses that cover a full range of focal lengths. Another sunset shot to show the depth of colour the A6400 can capture. Using the dedicated 'Sunset' mode was less successful, though, and messed up the colours rather than enhancing them. While both cameras are geared for capturing rapid movements, the A6700’s larger buffer size allows for more photos in a burst, giving it a slight edge over the A6400. The A6400 is well made in Thailand with a mostly plastic exterior. While it's mostly plastic, it's good plastic. When it was launched, the Sony A6400 didn't have too many direct vlogging rivals. That's all changed, with cameras like the Canon EOS M6 Mark II, Fujifilm X-S10, Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III and Panasonic Lumix G9, many of which can boast vari-angle not just tilting screens, and some of which have in-body stabilization.

The camera has a native ISO range of 100-32,000, which can be expanded to ISO 1,02,400. Burst shooting tops out at 11fps in ‘Hi+' mode, but without a live view of your subject. If you want the latter, then you need to drop the burst speed down to ‘Hi' mode which still gives you a decent 8fps. Runs to 8 FPS in silent mode ( A6300 only went to 3 FPS in silent. Both go to 11 FPS in regular mode). The A6400 finder is always perfectly legible from direct sunlight to darkness. My Nikons, Canons and Fujis always are too light or too dark, while my Sonys are always perfect.I let the camera go to ISO 102,400. You might want to set a lower maximum, like 25,600 or 12,800, for landscape shots, or use ISO102,400 for action. It's your choice, but remember it's always better to have a sharp, brainy shot than a clean blurry one. Use the highest ISO you need to get a fast enough shutter speed to stop your action. When we came to find rival cameras for the A6400 we realised it doesn’t have many direct competitors – in fact its combination of 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, built-in viewfinder, 4K video and 180-degree screen are pretty unique. Everyone needs to try a prime to learn to “zoom with your feet” but once you understand what focal lengths produce what types of images, it is awesome to have an all in one zoom. We tested the A6400 with Sony's long-range 18-135mm zoom, a neat, powerful and optically superior alternative to the standard 16-50mm power zoom.
