Pub landlord Valerie Furlow (Lynn Farleigh) remembers Dee and Margaret living in the same house and suggests her Polish ex-­‐husband was violent. But he hasn’t been seen in thirty years. Local fisherman Malcolm Kenrich (Paul Copley) denies a close friendship with Margaret, but why has he been left responsible for her will? Joe's daughter is a witness to the death of a pensioner, seemingly stabbed, on a rush hour train she and her father were travelling on. Her seemingly quiet life turns out to be anything but as Vera's investigation begins to unravel a tangled web of lies and deceit. An old friend of Vera's father appears to hold the key to the entire mystery, which involves unraveling a murder committed thirty years previously, a rape, and an affair which nobody suspected would be likely to have taken place. Vera realises that the answer may lie in events which have started to repeat themselves.

The body of teenager Ethan Dewley is found floating in a reservoir. When Vera and her team discover that Ethan had been missing for three days, they look to a rural timber community for answers. Airing on ITV in January 2019, this series saw cast and crew hard at work across the region, in locations ranging from Alnmouth and Amble in Northumberland - including Braid, Northside, the harbour and quayside - to Jesmond and the Grainger Market in Newcastle. Vera is called to the University of Northumberland when Jamie Marshall, a young, promising journalism student, plummets to his death from the top of a disused science building. I have to say that Vera Stanhope remains an intriguing character. The character is very good at drawing people out and digging in, but one wonders is it because she's a good DI or is it because she's just nosy. We have Vera realizing she needs to be better with her team. Not only because she does care about them (though she hate to admit it) but she realizes her behavior is going to drive them away. The Harbour Street investigation also has ties to her childhood and her father Hector and his birdwatching and egg stealing. Local arcade owner, Larry Crowe (Dave Hill) has a direct link to the family. His son Paddy died in a botched robbery at the Kenworthy home forty years ago. A witness saw him arguing with David on the night of the killing and a search of his property uncovers a bloodied baseball bat. But Larry has a watertight alibi and it’s clear he wasn’t the only person David met that night. Vera and her team investigate the death of a young man dredged up from a slurry pit. Vera discovers the victim was a traveller who had left his camp following a row with his parents about his being gay. Vera locates the victim's camper van, which contains a wad of notes, suggesting the victim was involved in something illegal. However, it is a deaf little boy who presents Vera with the solution to the case. And Brenda has since revealed that scenes were also shot on Holy Island, with popular pub The Ship Inn changing its name to play a key role in the plot.
