When the D-Day invasion came, paratroopers cut their way out of their jump harnesses and left thousands of deployed chutes strewn throughout Normandy. He tells the story of one reader in a nursing home who read in The New Yorker that he was the the late reader in a nursing home. The RK-1 was met with wide acclaim but the company backed out of their deal with Kotelnikov – conveniently around the same time that one of the two prototype parachutes was stolen from the Russian inventor. The first, "Silk Parachute," is apparently the most anthologized of McPhee's writings, and it refers to his own memories of his mother and of his own childhood. Annals of the Former World, McPhee’s tetralogy on geology, was published in a single volume in 1998 and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1999.

The others were vast in their scope and incisive in their dissection of topics but just didn't hit as hard as the first. S.
