So sorry, geeks, dweebs, poindexters and pedants, but I’m not using the exclamation point anymore in my review of Post’s new Chips Ahoy Cereal, the companion of Nutter Butter Cereal—both of which hit Walmart at the end of December and stores everywhere April 2018. Firstly, it contains a lot of refined and added sugars. Other than cornflour, sugar is the primary ingredient, making Post Chips Ahoy nearly 50% sugar. One serving of Chips Ahoy contains almost one-third of an entire day’s recommended sugar consumption and equals nearly four teaspoons of sugar. No, Chips Ahoy cereal is not high in protein. Based on the nutritional information, there is nearly no protein contained in the cereal. Thus, Chips Ahoy cereal should not be considered a way to contribute to your daily protein allowance at all. She added that if you want to feel full and stay energized, you'll want to "look for at least 5 grams of fiber and protein per 1 cup serving." Even better if the cereal "contain[s] at least 10% daily value of three or more nutrients including iron, calcium, zinc, B-vitamins, and Vitamin C." I’m imagining the food scientist behind these mini chips proudly holding a pie chart that’s 50% milk, 49% chocolate, and 1% “the space between the words milk and chocolate.”We were able to find this at Wal-Mart in Canada. Looking through online chatter, it seems like it’s only been spotted at Wal-Mart. I’m sure in the near future, it will slowly roll out to other major grocery stores as well. How much is it? Pros: Adequate flavor. Tastes similar to Cookie Crisp. Stays crunchy in milk for a while. Comes in big box. I haven’t had Cookie Crisp cereal before, so I don’t exactly know how it compares to that one. Nutrition Facts Final Thoughts Chips Ahoy cereal can be considered a vegan food. The cereal does not contain any milk-based ingredients. However, depending on how strict a vegan you are, there may be other ingredients in Chips Ahoy cereal that may concern you, such as refined white sugars that can become cross-contaminated by animal bone char. That’s what I imagine I yelled decades ago when I had my first taste of Cookie Crisp Cereal. And this is what I’d like to yell now after having my first taste of Post’s Original Chips Ahoy Cereal.

However, while this cereal is the breakfast adaptation of the most beloved chocolate chip cookie, the mini-cookie in this cereal is not an exact duplicate. They are more aligned with General Mill’s Cookie Crisp cereal though they still provide a bit of the coveted taste you want from Chips Ahoy. Altogether, it’s a rather unbalanced flavor palette that leaves me reaching for the Hershey’s Syrup to apply a manual drizzle. To use a proper processed cookie analogy: imagine a Girl Scout Trefoil that hasn’t quite transitioned into a Thanks-A-Lot. Secondly, Chips Ahoy contains several additives and preservatives, such as BHT, coloring, and artificial flavoring, which are not considered healthy.First impression: don’t smell the bag before you taste the cereal. Maybe it was just my industrial-jumbo-Godzilla-family-sized box, but it emitted the musky odor of a burnt-down Famous Amos factory. The product labeling for Chips Ahoy does not state that the cereal is gluten-free or safe to consume by those who have gluten allergies. The main ingredient in the cereal version of Chips Ahoy is corn flour. Corn flour is gluten-free flour. The cereal also contains oat flour, which is generally considered gluten-free. Post didn’t even need to compete against General Mill’s Cookie Crisp cereal in the beginning. Post simply created a commercial informing the country that the dream of having Chips Ahoy for breakfast was now a reality. Disclosure: I was provided a free sample by Walmart. The fact that I got it for free did not influence my review. It is worth noting that some ingredients present the possibility of cross-contamination, and those with gluten intolerance or an allergy should be cautious.
