There are lots of action filled pictures in the book, these really do give the impression of movement for the characters. Appealing both for its fantastical elements (Miss 4 liked the lions eating cake) and for showing that women can have any kind of career or skill set.

The story is well written, eventful and jolly, and children and parents/storytellers are likely to enjoy it equally. Through wonderfully rhythmical writing and exquisite illustrations, Judith Kerr OBE shows us that there is a lot more to this gang of grey-haired grannies than meets the eye! There are some lovely moments, like when one of the grown-up characters, the victim of a daring bakery raid, worries what his mum will say about all this, and when the perpetrators, a gang of teenager hoodies, get their comeuppance from the granny gang. I'm not totally happy with the demonising of hoodie wearers (thinking of those extra shy children who like to hide within their clothing). I liked spotting all of the little details in the pictures, there were so many things that made me smile. I was delighted to see she had a new book out especially one with such lovely characters and whimsical illustrations.

She is also the author and illustrator of numerous picture books, including The Tiger Who Came to Tea, which was first published in 1968 and has since sold more than one million copies worldwide.I don't think just anyone would get away with writing such a cheeky little book and I wonder if Judith Kerr might get up to some of the same outrageous activities herself! I love the fact this book tackles the ageist assumption that old people should be pushed to the sidelines and forgotten.
