You started your art career at a fairly young age. Was there someone in your family who encouraged you to pursue the arts?

Hanson has spent twenty years developing the unique techniques of Open Impressionism, which involve minimal brush strokes and the impasto application of paint. Unlike traditional oil painters, Hanson does not build up the painting layer by layer; instead, she lays her paint strokes side by side without overlapping and works to get each stroke "right the first time." The clean brush strokes give her paintings a mosaic or stained-glass appearance, while also conveying a sense of movement and spontaneity. She uses a limited palette of only five pigments to create vivid, un-muddied colors that ignite the imagination. Some of my favorite poems from this book are Monsters, Empty Spaces, and Welcome to Society. While these are some of the more depressing poems in the collection, I found that they spoke to me the most. Likely because of the classic rhyme scheme that reminded me of the children's poetry books that I used to read. But I also found that the way Hanson talks about mental heath and some of the "Monsters" that are in here head were a perfect way to describe the way that many kids in my generation are feeling. The speaker wants to ensure that the reader is reminded of this fact and that mirrors aren’t the only judge of character. They can’t see “how your eyelids flutter” as you’re falling asleep. I've read once two of her poems to an elderly friend of mine. She had tears in her eyes after reading them. Rating this was truly difficult, because I know that if I read this three years ago, it would have been my lifeline... these days, my perspective has changed for the better, and the darkness was more like reminiscing than feeling. Overall, I still enjoyed the experience greatly, especially the beginning and end, but I think my current psyche limited my connection to her words, despite them being beautiful and honest (in her eyes). When I paint, I want to capture the joy I feel whenever I surround myself with nature, and I use composition, textured brush strokes, and contrasting colors to communicate pure aesthetics. When I paint, I lay down my brush strokes confidently and boldly, trying to recreate the freedom and spontaneity I feel out of doors. I try not to overlap my brush strokes, getting each stroke right the first time. This keeps my colors pure and alive. To me, the beauty of the outdoors is all about color." Open Impressionism is unlike any other painting style and truly stands by itself in the contemporary art world. While inspired by the impressionists of the past, Hanson has a more expressionistic manner of painting, and her works attempt to recapture the emotional content of the outdoors, instead of merely the light and forms of the landscape. While Open Impressionism was developed over the span of 20 years and certainly changed as the artist experimented and refined her techniques, there are some basic hallmarks of Open Impressionism that we can take note of.

Often, we observe the small things in the people we love. We observe their mannerisms and behavior and fall in love with them repeatedly for the small things they do or say. While reading these lines of the poem, it almost feels like Hanson is urging the readers to love themselves the way we love others. I must add, though there wasn't a book where I appreciated all of the poems, I do find more poems I love in Hanson's books than in any other. Personification: the speaker personifies the mirror, suggesting that it is intrinsically untrustworthy. One has to assume that it’s going to lie to them, she suggests. For someone like me to appreciate a poem, I need to understand it, love the harmony of the words and rhymes, and able to feel emotions in it - whether it may be gratitude, sadness, awe,... And Erin Hanson is an artist who paints her thoughts and emotions into a painting we can keep watching, finding details we haven't seen the first time, with colours that speak to our heart. I like to experiment with my paintings, trying different techniques and effects with the paint to create a more stunning visual image. One painting that I experimented with turned out so well that it influenced my style from then on out. This painting was called Crystal Light, painted in 2013. I did not have any professional artists in my family, but my parents are both musicians and I learned very early that practice makes perfect. My dad suggested to me that I draw 5 life drawings every day, to develop the skill and confidence I needed to become a painter. I took this advice to heart, and I firmly believe that the best way to learn to paint is to paint every day and perfect your skills by practice and doingness (not just by studying concepts!). None of us are perfect. None of us look perfect either. The truth is that perfection is just an illusion. We are perfect just the way we are. Perfectionism is all your imperfections. Perfectionism is you. In the first lines of the poem, the speaker begins by noting that it’s important to “Never trust a mirror.” Mirrors lie to use when we look into them by suggesting that what’s on the surface is the only thing that matters. The topics can be a bit cringe & Tumblr-deep that's why I'm only giving this book 4/5 stars but honestly Erin Hanson is such an underrated poet. Love love love poetry that actually rhymes as opposed to modern popular free verse poetry. It takes so much thought and intention to convey a meaning so precisely in sentences that rhyme (added difficulty!) and it takes talent and taste to present it in such a beautiful artistic manner. I can only dream of having such a way with words and such an immaculate sense of timing. Even though the book had no theme and was a rather random collection of Hanson's poetry ( just like #1) I liked the clean format and the switches between longer and shorter poems, although that is nothing special. When I am out in the field, I use a variety of cameras to capture different angles that might come in handy later when I am painting: I use two Canon EOS 5D cameras, one with a standard lens and one with a telephoto zoom lens. I use my iPhone’s camera when I want to shoot wide-angle shots or panoramas. I sometimes use a drone to get higher-elevation shots or reach difficult angles. My painting technique is done with expressive color and loose brush strokes, in a wet-on-wet technique known as alla prima. Alla prima comes from Italian, literally meaning 'at first attempt' and is loosely applied to any painting that is done in a direct, expressive style. I'll probably try to finish the series, because I hear the next two are most optimistic. I am definitely interested in seeing her growth as a person, and I think if I saw the overarching development of her character, I would relate to these poems much more.
