In 1999, Pavarotti performed a charity benefit concert in Beirut, to mark Lebanon's re-emergence on the world stage after a brutal 15-year civil war. Luciano Pavarotti OMRI ( / ˌ p æ v ə ˈ r ɒ t i/, US also / ˌ p ɑː v-/, Italian: [luˈtʃaːno pavaˈrɔtti]; 12 October 1935–6 September 2007) was an Italian operatic tenor who during the late part of his career crossed over into popular music, eventually becoming one of the most acclaimed tenors of all time. By that time, only 11 other artists had ever been given the same award, including Billy Joel, Liza Minelli and Frank Sinatra. He received two Primetime Emmy Awards for his PBS variety specials Pavarotti in Philadelphia: La Boheme and Duke of Mantua, Rigoletto Great Performances. He felt awkward because he didn’t know how to present himself and hold his hands when he wasn’t playing a character on the opera stage. Pavarotti’s performances include Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ with Bono from U2, ‘Perfect Day’ with Lou Reed, ‘When We Dance’ with Sting and ‘It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World’ with James Brown.

Pavarotti’s version of the famous aria ‘ Nessun dorma’ was used as the theme for World Cup coverage, and he used to perform at matches with The Three Tenors. As one of the Three Tenors, who performed their first concert during the 1990 FIFA World Cup before a global audience, Pavarotti became well known for his televised concerts and media appearances. In 1976, Pavarotti debuted at the Salzburg Festival, appearing in a solo recital on 31 July, accompanied by pianist Leone Magiera.It was, in fact, the very same track that Bocelli had recorded as a demo for Zucchero to send to Pavarotti in 1992. Donizetti's most famous aria (translating as 'A furtive tear') has had so many interpretations over the years that it'd be easy to forget what a sad little number it is. He might've been able to cut it on the opera stage, but few tenors could really take hold of the lighter material too, and that's why Pavarotti was such an enduring favourite. Sadly the film flopped, but the big screen was an opportunity for the name ‘Pavarotti’ to spread far and wide. The recorded album sold millions of copies, [21] and the first Three Tenors recording became the best-selling classical album of all time.

His career highlights included performances at the world’s most famous opera houses, celebrity duets from stadium stages, and being a member of The Three Tenors – an operatic ‘supergroup’ whose musical legacy lives on through countless recordings and broadcasts. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of his career, he brought the winners of the competition to Italy for gala performances of La bohème in Modena and Genoa, and then to China where they staged performances of La bohème in Beijing ( Peking). At the beginning of the 1980s, he set up The Pavarotti International Voice Competition for young singers, performing with the winners in 1982 in excerpts of La bohème and L'elisir d'amore. His incredible operatic performances made Pavarotti famous in the classical music and now sports worlds, and his collaborations with rock and pop stars spread his fame even wider.

His career as a tenor can be traced back to the time he sang with Corale Rossini, a male voice choir from his hometown, Modena, which his father was also a member of. On 10 February 2006, Pavarotti performed " Nessun dorma" at the 2006 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Turin, Italy, at his final performance.
