I also think there’s a very compelling detective in Jack Caffery and then there’s this absolutely bonkers storyline with the Anchor-Ferrers family going on at the same time, although in a slightly different timeline which is very cleverly done. I’d like to think we succeeded in doing this, though, as evidenced by the stunning cast we got on board. This is the most work I’ve done before filming any job, partly because it’s the best script I’ve ever read and the best part I’ve ever played. On the surface, it’s a crazy, cruel comedic scene but it reveals how, on different levels, people can be and what they want from each other.

Of course Jack Caffrey will eventually be the policeman who knocks this family’s front door, but try as she might Hayder cannot create an equivalence between the sections. A mature couple and their daughter are taking a break in their countryside residence in Somerset because the father, Oliver, is recovering from heart surgery.We know this, we also know that its possible their one hope is Jack Caffery, a man who does not know they exist.

It's written well in the usual Hayder style of teasing and shocking but I found some of the plotline stretching the realms of plausiblity. The cast are amazing - we have the central character of Jack who is a fascinating version of a crime cracker, but he’s also got this personal history which is quite elusive but it creates that extra depth to him as a character, so you become really interested in who he is.

Birdman, Hayder's first Caffery book, stands on its own, but books 2-6 essentially tell one extended narrative. Obviously it doesn’t take much brain power to realise that if you are going to dip your toes into a series of books about Detective Inspector Jack Caffrey, number seven isn’t actually the best place to start. It’s also been brilliant to work with these great directors and such a fantastic cast and crew, it really makes you want to up your game. Big Island, LA connects the dots between a heist gone wrong at a police shooting range and corporate greed and political corruption, leaving a former combat marine and an agoraphobic crime reporter to sort out the mystery.
