The brand new eighteen-episode series, which is currently in production, will premiere on Showtime in 2017. It’s been quite a ride, but nearly every speculation and rumor about the Blu-ray turned out to be true. Lynch was so heartbroken by the way both the TV series and the movie were treated that it took him two-and-a-half decades to come back to Twin Peaks. Although 'Twin Peaks' marked a milestone in bringing beautiful cinematic photography to television, it was still a TV show produced on a quick shooting schedule and small budget (compared to feature films). It managed to be all of these things at once, without contradiction, woven up into a tightly structured narrative that demanded strict attention from its audience.

The title on screen be damned, whatever this new show was going to be, it wasn't the Twin Peaks I knew. Judged entirely on its own, the Criterion edition of David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is a solid enough release.Murdered homecoming queen Laura Palmer once famously appeared to FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper in a dream and told him, "I'll see you again in 25 years. Season Two, which, setting aside the differences in production values, aspect ratio and other factors, handily bests Fire Walk with Me. Among other tie-ins, the revival series prompted Fire Walk With Me to be inducted into the Criterion Collection and reissued on Blu-ray. The show is also littered with numerous moments of genuine brilliance – sporadic scenes or set-pieces (and one entire episode) that rank among the best David Lynch has ever directed, which is really saying something.

Early video releases on VHS, Laserdisc and DVD could not include the pilot or 'Fire Walk With Me' with the other episodes. In almost every episode, I've noticed new details in the sets and costumes and production design that I never saw before. At the time, serial dramas were a rarity on American television, and none had ever required viewers to scrutinize its plot continuity and clues as much as 'Twin Peaks' did. The eerie sounds eerier, the unsettling more unsettling, and the atmospheric that much more atmospheric. Finally available, these "missing pieces" provide a glimpse into what else was happening in the town of Twin Peaks during and around the events of the film.Disc One contains the episodes Part 1: My Log Has a Message for You and Part 2: The Stars Turn and a Time Presents Itself, both presented separately or as a combined feature-length presentation (as they originally aired). The public fell out of love with 'Twin Peaks' almost as quickly as it had fallen into love with the show in the first place.

The Partyland nightclub scene has blaring, deafening music that intentionally drowns out the dialogue. I can't say for certain whether this means the movie got a better video transfer, or whether this can be chalked up to the movie having a bigger budget and better production values. It’s easy to see why most of this material was cut, simply because it’s extraneous to the story of Laura and her family and would have simply added to the running time. I have to imagine that most fans already own that disc, and this one doesn't offer anything new other than a couple of (interesting but insubstantial) interviews and an alternate 2.Discs Three through Six contain episodes only: Part 5: Case Files, Part 6: Don’t Die, Part 7: There’s a Body All Right, Part 8: Gotta Light? Lynch himself stepped away from the series for a time to make his film ' Wild at Heart' and pursue other interests.

Whether you watched the show on TV or through Showtime’s streaming service, prepare to be blown away by the A/V quality of this new Blu-ray release. Disc Seven contains the episodes Part 17: The Past Dictates the Future and Part 18: What is Your Name? tender loving care afforded the show -- but it still delivers and bests everything release that's come before it, domestic or intentional.

Essentially a prequel of sorts, it reveals the nuclear “birth” of a Woodsman, personified as the dark husk of a man with an unlit cigarette in his mouth who asks “Gotta light? Love it or hate it (and the episode inspired plenty of both types of reaction), the episode is unlike anything that had ever aired on television before or likely ever will again.
