You need a powerful device: Ultimately, this is a laptop built for the everyday, so you won't get any spectacular performance out of it. We measure the average brightness and color quality of each laptop's display using our in-house light meter and colorimeter. For general performance, we run our machines through tests that include Geekbench 5 (CPU performance), as well as various 3DMark tests to measure graphics capabilities. We also run a file transfer test to measure how fast a machine's hard drive is, and a custom battery test that has the machine browse the internet over Wi-Fi until it runs out of juice.

Chromebooks run on Chrome OS, which is a web-based operating system very similar to Google Chrome, so if you’re familiar with Google Chrome, a Chromebook might be a good option for you. Traditional laptops typically run the Windows operating system, and Macbooks run macOS, and will usually be full of RAM to make sure the laptop runs without lag or performance issues - something Chromebooks don’t have to worry about. A glossy coating means that reflections can be a bit of a problem at some brightness levels, but sat on a train next to a window we found that setting the screen to full brightness effectively countered this problem. Operating system: Laptops typically come in three flavors: Windows (most mainstream PCs), macOS (MacBooks) and Chrome OS (Chromebooks). Chrome OS isn't good for much besides web surfing, file management, and light computing, so a Chromebook isn't a great choice for serious schoolwork. However, a crafty student could install Linux on a high-powered Chromebook to turn it into a decent laptop for engineering work.

The Chromebook 11 comes with a total of four USB ports, an impressive amount for a Chromebook at any price. There are two USB-C ports on our review unit, either of which can accept the power adapter plug. There are also two USB Type-A ports, useful for connecting a wired mouse or perhaps an external drive to supplement the Dell's internal storage. Unfortunately, there's no SD or microSD card slot, so you can't expand storage that way. You want a budget-y Chromebook: This is a premium item with premium specs, so expect to pay for all this hardware.
