And Paramount’s new 4K disc continues the excellent work of the first film’s release by correcting the awful transfer that has blighted all previous 1080p releases of the film. Without reference back to the previous release, sharpness and fine detail may therefore initially disappoint as its not an inherently razor-sharp film – the initial transition into Sidney’s room from a slow pan up from the campus grounds at 11mins 50s is still very soft here… but even a cursory glance back to the previous disc shows huge improvements from start to finish. Spanish tracks and a host of other stereo soundtracks, together with a huge range of subtitle options. At time of writing, there is no sign of the other three films (' Scream 2,' ' Scream 3,' ' Scre4m') on Blu-ray with remastered video.

the old Blu-ray palette, but here, the colors breathe in natural beauty and firm command of tonal accuracy. In the first half of the movie, it's a very minor annoyance, but as it progresses, the ringing grows into a frustrating presence. Whilst only maybe film nerds knew the rules of a horror movie when the first Scream came out, a year later when this sequel hit cinemas, everyone knew the rules of being a ‘sequel’… bigger, more excessive and just worse.

Marco Beltrami’s effective and for this listener anyway wholly nostalgic score (‘Dewey’s Theme’ gets the hairs raised on the back of the arms every time) sits nicely alongside these and has a rich sense of body and musicality throughout. Overall, devoted fans will be plenty happy with this UHD edition, and given the improvements, it is a recommended upgrade. Note: disappointingly, the accompanying 1080p disc is the exact same disc from 2011 as previously released – it does not have this new transfer on it, instead lazily repacking the same old hideously digital looking transfer we’ve been desperately trying to get way from for years.
