Some camping slippers are better designed to be used outdoors than others, and the major contributing factor for this is the sole material. No matter how well-enforced, fabric soles will never work as well as rubber or PU soles. If your slippers are designed to be used outdoors, they will have a solid rubber sole with some kind of tread underneath for grip. If your slippers don’t have this, they are designed for your tent and not walking outside. Are Camping Slippers Waterproof? The booties are similar in form to the Snugpak ones. They come to mid calf,have a synthetic insulation (more on that shortly), and a water resistant outer layer (again, more on this shortly). Unlike the Snugpak boots, the Carinthia booties have a “sole” made from a more hard-wearing fabric. The construction is, as you would hope given the cost, very good. The use of flat-felled seams really enhances the look of the booties, as well as adding strength to the seam. The North Face Thermoball Traction Mule V are one of the best camping slippers for apres ski and putting on after a long day dealing with cold feet. There is a very nice balance between warmth/comfort and traction/durability, making these base camp slippers ideal for wearing inside and outside of the tent.

Hard to say which is best but if your priorities are warmth and coziness, then down is the winner, or if you want to wear your slippers outside, then synthetic insulation makes more sense. You can get down slippers with waterproof fabric, a rugged sole, and synthetic insulation that is warmer than down. But in general, this is a good guideline. Camping Slippers Vs BootiesNot all camping slippers are waterproof, and some are even not supposed to be used outdoors at all. If your camping slippers are waterproof, they will have some kind of membrane within the outer fabric and feature a rubber sole to lift them off the ground. As far as we know, there are no fully waterproof camping slippers out there, but if there are, we will be sure to let you know. Are Camping Slippers Worth It? The insulation at the very top is fairly thin, but around your feet, they are very lofty. They are one of the heaviest options on our list of the top 10 camping slippers, but if weight is not a big deal, then these are great value and very durable. The insulation is Snugpak’s propriety, tried and tested, Softie Premier that they use in all their insulated products. It is fully synthetic and still works well should it get wet. There are newer and better alternatives, like the G-Loft Insualtion used by Carinthia, but the Softie insulation is tried and tested. I decided against down, despite the very attractive price. I’m not a fan of down. Firstly, and especially if you are buying from China, it is hard to be sure that it is ethically produced. I’m no hippy, but I do have somewhat of a conscience…

The outer layer is made from Gore WINDSTOPPER Fabric. I am unsure of the hydrostatic head for the particular fabric used here, or indeed if the seams are taped internally. However, if they are using the same fabric across their entire line it’ll be very good. I have had condensation drip on my sleeping bag, creating a puddle, which did not penetrate at all. Most likely they were looking to use the fabric to eliminate any wind-chill more than to be water resistant.The Rab Hut Boots are almost identical to the low-cut slipper version below the ankle, but the boot version continues up the leg for added warmth and comfort. If you are someone who really appreciates being warm on a cold day or night, then these synthetic down booties might be for you. It should be noted that these boots don’t just keep your ankles warm but also make your feet warmer which can make them a bit too hot for summer nights. I am very happy with them. They take up very little space in my bag and work as advertised. They are a little dearer than some of the alternatives on offer, but they use tried and tested materials, and you get to support a British company and British jobs! It is worth noting that Snugpak still manufacture in the UK. This does have an effect on the price, but you get the warm and fuzzy feeling of supporting a UK brand that was started by a bloke sewing stuff in his kitchen in his spare time. Opinion My only gripe is that I would like them to have some form of sole. This would enhance the life of the bootie, especially if you are wearing them in bothies. A tougher fabric with non-slip dots would be a great enhancement for these boots. Rating: Value for money – 4: Dearer than some competitor products, but not painfully so. Plus you get the benfit of knowing it is ethically produced, and supporting a company that still manufactures in the UK.

As already covered above, the insulation type should be one of your first considerations when looking for some warm camp footwear inside your tent. Down insulation offers the best weight-to-warmth ratio but synthetic insulation works better if it gets wet. Choose wisely, and get in touch if you have any questions.
