As I felt after reading American Dirt, I once again feel that immigrants should be venerated for all that they endure in their effort for a better life. Áno, samozrejme, už prešiel nejaký ten čas a nemôžeme všetkých súdiť rovnako. Ale Rómovia sú stále citlivá téma pre niektorých Slovákov.With any autobiographical tale from a seemingly pseudonymous author, the question arises: is any of this actually real? Literary hoaxes are not an uncommon occurrence in the realm of memoir and in internetland we now have the act of catfishing too. That this young woman, who didn't learn to read and write until she was in her teens, was able to write this book is a testament to her determination in the face of desperation.

The book stumbles in the second half, as this characterisation falters. This is possibly due to the events occurring, as the surrounding cast seems far more two-dimensional then the fully-fledged characters of the earlier chapters. For fans of Educated, this is the remarkable true story of a girl from a Romani Ghetto in search of a better life. My mother’s side of the family are Romani. Gypsies. No baby-snatching and tambourines, just resilient souls and richly coloured skin. I look most like them, with my brown eyes and scars. I don’t have the richly coloured skin, though. Instead of deep bronze or golden ochre, I came out the colour of sunflower oil and, thanks to childhood malnutrition followed by years of low iron levels, I’m now the shade of an off-brand Simpson.’ There are parts where I cringed at how Tanszer would minimize or explain away the terrible things her parents did to her. In the end, I got the impression she was articulating her feelings at the time because by the end of the story we have a very good picture of her relationship with them. I really appreciated how she articulated the complexities of her relationship with her family. It is so toxic, but she seems to always hold out hope that they truly care.Eliska's story is an extraordinary and powerful read. It's the ultimate book about survival and an against-all-odds fight to make it in life. Highly recommend.' Clover Stroud

Myslela som, že budem mať knihu zaradenú na poličke s Hillbilly Elegy a Vzdelanou, ale bola to väčšia nálož - pomery, z ktorých pochádzala, prostredie, v ktorom vyrastala, veci, ktoré sa jej diali, jej rodičia. A tiež literárny jazyk bol odlišný, autorka svoj temperament nekrotila. Keby som pred rokom nečítala knihu o katastrofálnom nezvládaní vzdelávania Rómov na Slovensku, azda by sa mi v tej mojej bratislavskej bubline niektoré veci chápali len ťažko. Vďaka Jurajovi Čokynovi som ale už nemala klapky na očiach, a tak som detstvo Elišky sledovala skôr s veľkým súcitom a smútkom ako v šialenom šoku a s nedôverou. Pokiaľ ale máte o šanciach tejto skupiny ľudí iba veľmi matné predstavy, zrejme sa vám to, čo píše Eliška, bude zdať neuveriteľné.
