A leading self-heating food brand is a famous hot-pot restaurant chain, HaiDiLao. It leverages the self-heating functionality to extend hotpot consumption, and it’s brand, to the in-home occasions. Despite its price point of around CNY40 per serve, it is an economical choice for those who cannot afford to dine in more frequently. Undoubtedly, the reputation of HaiDiLao has done much to enhance the image and attract consumers to the self-heating format. After the success of HaiDiLao, which launched in 2017, many hot-pot restaurant brands launched their own offers. Children aged 16 and under are NOT allowed to prepare for this product alone. Self-heating cans have dual chambers, one surrounding the other. In one version, the inner chamber holds the food or drink, and the outer chamber houses chemicals which undergo an exothermic reaction when combined. This design has the advantages of being more efficient (less heat is lost to the surrounding air) as well as reducing excessive heating of the product's exterior, causing possible discomfort to the user. In either case, after the heat from the reaction has been absorbed by the food, the user can enjoy a hot meal or drink.

Also take into consideration that for China, paying 40 yuan for an instant meal is not that cheap, and people could easily get a full noodle or baozi meal with a drink for the same price, depending on where they are. All in all, trying out the self-heating hotpot is a fun experience in itself. Personally, I favor the self-heating hotpot brand that I tried out here, but Haidilao is not a bad option. Of course, there’s nothing better than actually going to a Haidilao hotpot restaurant, or to make your own hotpot at home.
