Araújo added that the book was "the type of story I've been wanting to do since I began working on comics: a story with room to breathe, to decompress and to build in a narrative delicately constructed to make sure that the powerful moments are devastating." This is just really great, though very gruesome and intense, visual storytelling. It is extremely cinematic and gives the illustrator room to show off; which he does, often. I think the less you know going in, the better. Basically, a seemingly average guy may or may not be a killer, takes a job for a hit. When he gets there though, things go sideways. And not in the way you’d think.

Collecting issues # 1-5, this thriller/mystery series excites as you read between the lines - I mean frames - in this first of a series.

The second volume of A Repetitious Thirst for Vengeance is decent, much like the first. Andre Lima Araujo’s art remains the star of the show. It isn’t just the landscape shots that are so beautiful but the action is expertly-drawn, so you follow all the movements perfectly in a scene, and the angles/establishing shots are always cleverly laid out so you get all the information you need without having to read a word. And hats off to Chris O’Halloran too for superb colouring - the art on this series is flawless.

We never find out, at least not in this first volume, which is my biggest critique with the book: there are too many questions and zero answers which makes for an unsatisfying narrative. But, I’m also interested in finding out the answers, so Remender at least provides a tantalising setup.The captivating elements of violent tragedy, crime mysteries, car chases, and shootouts add flavor to the narrative. However, the abundance of silent sequences might hinder full emotional investment in the plot's development.

So, when all is said and done, A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance #1 begins its story in a slow-paced fashion that gives the reader some time to get familiar with their protagonist’s personality before ending on a revelation. If a slow burn story is your speed, you might want to give this book a look. Art by André Lima Araújo is appropriately dark - I mean really dark. Dark in content and dark because much action is happening at night. So many great moments - when Wen puts the pigeon out of its misery, the horror of seeing the murdered couple and realizing he saw the hit man, his heart pounding as he approaches the next victim's apartment beside another hit man. Yeah, gritty stuff here. The action does dominate the book from the halfway point on, which bothered me because I wanted more information on who the characters were and why things were happening, but the action is done superbly so it’s engaging, if a bit shallow. And that’s in big part due to the magnificent artist of this series, Andre Lima Araujo, whose art is absolutely beautiful. novel a (vol 1.) a higher rating given there is more information in one go but alone it feels as if there is a lot of information and context missing but maybe that is the point? I’ve never been to Vancouver (one day…) but it looks great here, particularly Chinatown, and the sequencing throughout is executed so perfectly that you understand exactly what’s happening in a scene - where the characters are in a room, how they move around, how they end up where they end up. This comic is a great example of the writer and artist as well-balanced storytellers, with both complementing each other’s work to best effect for the audience. Chris O’Halloran’s subtle but appealing colours also add a lot to the stunning visuals - this is one of the best-looking comics I’ve seen in a while.Rounding out the presentation is the lettering. Given the limited amount of dialogue in the book, it would be highly disappointing if the lettering managed to go astray in this story. Happily, no such failure occurs. Who hasn’t had a day like this: you go visit a wealthy couple only to find them brutally murdered by international assassins at the behest of the billionaire elite - and it’s raining and you don’t have a brolly! Well, time to hit the old dusty trail with a couple other targets and a buncha people with guns chasing you and hope you don’t get too wet!
