In this Inflammation Special, we hear from Janet Lord, who is Professor of Immune Cell Biology at the Institute for Inflammation and Ageing at Birmingham University. This is really easy to read (finished it in an afternoon) with some really helpful suggestions of how to improve your health in a very doable way. I knew everything in this book already from reading Dr Julia Jones’ excellent trilogy on smart wellness, but this book acted as a good prompt/reminder for me and I’m going to make an effort to enact some of these changes. Michael takes a break to brew up a cup of green tea, warming up to its distinctive taste and its health benefits. As Mosley explains, all the suggestions seem manageable, which is the key to trying them and sticking with them.

This is a book, then, that will tell you how, when, and why to, amongst other things: stand on one leg; finish your shower with a burst of cold; eat fermented food; fast overnight; eat oily fish; delay your morning coffee; sing; learn to do something new; eat an apple; put plants in your room; stand up; eat dark chocolate; read fiction; and count your blessings.

This is a quick read, perhaps a book readers will refer back to: interesting, fascinating, and informative. I knew about eating an apple a day, but not about the benefits of eating beetroot (which I love) two to three times a week. Green tea contains the polyphenol EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate) and Professor Okello explains how this polyphenol inhibits a destructive enzyme which harms our brain cells. I find it quite easy at night time to watch two episodes of a favourite show back to back without moving on the couch, but since I started standing more often and interrupting this period of slothing and relaxing, I have noticed an improvement. That said it is still a good book if you are looking for some health tips you can easily integrate into your life.This book is based on a podcast that was started during lockdown, just introduces Just One Thing each episode you can do to improve your health.
