Chapter 17: The following day Mr Kelo is supposed to be coming to dinner at the Fitzgeralds’ house but he has been arrested and taken to a detention centre. Nicholas will be appearing in court with Mr Kelo and will ask for bail.

For its educational merit I would rate this book a three or four. It is a clear endorsement of the Refugee Council, a real life organization in GB. It also raises awareness of a specific type of refugee conflict that most logical people would find hard to argue with (although GB still manages to). It offers a neutral-negative look at the culture around anti-refugee people in GB and the political system in dealing with refugees, but also gives some hope for those who are vocal (the community around refugees not the refugees themselves). It touches on the issue of stigma around people on food stamps and the living condition of orphans.Chapter five is one of the significant chapter in the whole novel because its shows the development of novel it builds up the tension so the readers can get excited to find out what is going to be the next step of the novel. In this chapter most of the characters are introduced. Chapter 5 begins with Alem arriving at the children's home and a description of what the place looks like and how it makes Alem feel. He is firstly introduced to a worker at the children's home named Sarah Cohen who shows him around the place informs him of the rules and regulation of the place. How important is it to understand and empathise with the experiences of people from different cultures?

I also enjoyed chapter 27 (last chapter), I felt it sends a powerful message out and it certainly made the book feel finished and complete. His father soon turns up at his house and they go for dinner (spaghetti). The following Monday, Alem comes home to find that his father had gone to the Home Office to submit his asylum application, but was arrested and taken to Campsfield House immigration detention centre. Nicholas will also represent Alem's father and apply for their dank bail. Bail is awarded, and Alem's father is put into a grimy hostel in Forest Gate, and it is revealed that both Alem's and his father's application for asylum will be heard together. Chapter 11: Alem is informed of the date of his appeal hearing. It will be early in the New Year. He continues to work hard at school the rest of the term. He spends his Christmas money on a bike. On his own, and in the hands of the social services and the Refugee Council, Alem lives from letter to letter, waiting to hear something from his father. Then he meets car-obsessed Mustapha, the lovely 'out-of-your-league' Ruth and dangerous Sweeney – three unexpected allies who spur him on in his fight to be seen as more than just the Refugee Boy.Chapter 16: Alem and Robert enjoy their bike ride however Alem’s bike is stolen on his way home. Unexpectedly, Mr Kelo comes to see him. He and Alem go out for dinner. While Alem is facing all of these new challenges, he's slowly starting to make new friends. I really like this part of the book, with Alem and his foster sister, Ruth. Alem shows Ruth a photo of him and his parents. Chapter 21: Alem moves into the hotel. The protest group has a campaign meeting. There is a benefit gig at the school.
