The onboard anti-shake system, which employs a combination of gyro sensors and a microprocessor, is claimed to be so reliable that a steady view is provided even from a moving vehicle, while the batteries required for it to work last up to nine hours of use. I thought the stabilisation was excellent and really “snapped in” well and held it well. Better than the two 10x30ii examples I had tested. Due to its low weight it was a serious contender. It was the first to be eliminated however, because of narrow fov and the difference between 10x and 12x seemed minor. Also, the price point seemed to be in “no-mans land” compared to the 10x models. Nevertheless it left a positive impression. These binoculars feature the same Super Spectra anti-reflective coatings as its EF range of camera lenses. They reflect only a minimal amount of light and transmit the full visible spectrum, resulting in images with a faithful colour rendition and very good contrast. Porro Type II prisms In the following image I've made a simple parallelism. Here you have a great device, able to provide you with stunning views, but if and only if your finger is continuously located on the pink spot. Otherwise, it doesn't work. The contrast, the sharpness, the brightness, the level of detail... all will be there, but if and only if your finger is on the pink spot.

The 10x30 pass this test (it is a snug fit, but it succeeds at it), which I really like, I find it so convenient, seriously. So, both in terms of "grabbability" and portability I can see the 10x30 IS II becoming my main (even only) pair. The only caveat is the rain (because neither of these Canon are waterproof), but then I live in the island of Ibiza, and we don't get a lot of rain here (maybe that's one of the reasons 42 mm binoculars don't appeal to me either; it is usually very bright here and dawn/twilight are brief periods where a x32 gives you basically 95 % of what you'll ever need in terms of brightness). I'm glad I took the chance. A good reminder that binoculars are a very personal choice and we shouldn't rely only on the opinions of others to make a decision. In contrast, when I first looked through the 32mm series binoculars my overwhelming feeling was “why bother?” And I might add that with an ipd of 72mm I don’t mind the eyecups on this series. So that ironically enough is not an issue for me. My negativity towards the 32s centres on a feeling that they don’t seem to add anything over the 10x30/12x36 series, other than one touch activation. And compared to the 10x42L ( which is almost same price here in OZ) are a disappointing retrograde step. Eagle Optics also has different types of rainguards for your oculars. Again measure to see what size you need. I prefer these. When we observed the Moon and Jupiter (or held them just outside the field of view) there were no spurious ghost images, so the coatings are certainly fit for purpose. My comments of the 12X36 IS III are as follows, in some ways similar,but also with a somewhat different take.

The covers each have a plastic ring (not documented anywhere) that slips inside a groove within the collar, giving it some added structure, but also keeping the ocular armor from sliding too far forward. They slide firmly over the objectives and snap shut, protecting it well enough.I put fresh lithium AA's in both, and compared at close distances, far distances, in bright and low light. Once again, the binos utilize the same Super Spectra lens coating as utilized in Canon’s EF camera lens range, with the aim of providing high-resolution viewing with low distortion, while preventing ghosting and scattered light. with good suppression of stray light. Their only real fault is more false colour than the latest HD designs. I really like your comment about the IS being like and old friend you know well, and you know it's weak points and strengths (an when he/she can really get on your nerves). I feel the same about other devices or places and it's something I've learned to live with over time, but in this case maybe the mistake were my expectations. I can totally relate to this experience. I find the 18x50 takes some effort to get the most out of them. However I find that there a few remedial actions one can take to improve the situation.
