I drew inspiration from all sort of visual sources, from the caricatures of Vanity Fair from late 19th century and Tintin of Hergé to Indian miniature paintings and Japanese Ukiyo-e as well as some influence from Chinese ink painting, but the initial idea of “Slowboy” was inspired and influenced by the “Ivy Boys” created by the great Japanese illustrator Mr Kazuo Hozumi, who also wrote the foreword to my recently published book “Mr Slowboy: Portraits of the Modern Gentleman”. As a Correspondent for this legendary Northwestern US daily newspaper, he has an endless sense of curiosity. In partnership with fashion illustrator Fei Wang, the range’s T-shirts don a legion of graphics depicting city bikers. On shades of navy, white and grey, the artist’s work, more regularly recognized under the moniker Mr. Slowboy, appears front and center on each design.

Tell us a bit about the process. How long does a typical illustration take to draw and what techniques do you use? Our man dresses in wear topical to concourse exhibitions and car racing in Britain. Yes, this is my first book and a summary of my first stage of working full-time as a fashion illustrator. I was approached by Victionary, a Hong Kong based publisher in mid 2020 about creating a men’s styling book which made me review and assess all the work I had produced in the last 6 years, and it’s quite interesting and refreshing to look at them collectively. I thought perhaps I should just use this opportunity to curate an “exhibition” that archives and showcases the development of my previous commissions and personal work in a book form!Fox Brothers, the English woollen mill established in Somerset in 1772 is credited with being the originator of fine woollen and worsted flannels during the last century and is still said to produce the best in the world. According to style connoisseurs, when choosing flannel, “always be sure to ask for it (Fox) by name”. To highlight the exclusive nature of this collaboration between artist and brand, Bolin Webb is to limit the production run to 1000 pieces. Each razor set will be numbered and every shaver with a Mr Slowboy razor will be identifiable by the number on its enclosed signature card. We have been talking a lot about menswear brands and clothing. Do you maybe work with any other type of brands?

It’s been my second time in Florence during Pitti but first time when I got in to the fair at Fortezza. And I always have my notebook with me now, so hopefully I won’t loose this one. And what would you say is the important aspect of the brand when you choose which one to work with? I draw some inspiration from Japanese illustrator Hozumi Kazuo, famous mens fashion illustrator renewedfor his work for Men’s Club magazine. I also like the old Vanity Fair magazine pictures and Indian miniature painting. At the beginning yes, it was this guy, dressed in a specific way and he looked very much the same on every illustration. Lately as I started doing more commission work I think the meaning is more about the style. So Mr Slowboy would be the style of illustrations rather than a specific person. I think it is nice when other brands recognise and appreciate your work. For example recently some car and watch brands approached me. If their subject or item fit my style or if the project is fashion related I would work with them. I wouldn’t do a project with a brand that either has nothing to do with fashion or if it is completely different from my aesthetics.

There are two aspects here, I think. One would be theprestige or exclusivity of the fabric/tailor/brand and the other, more important, would be how this particular item suits me. Mr.Slowboy is highly respected in the art and fashion worlds for his pencil illustrations having worked with global luxury fashion brands including Barbour and Fortnum & Mason. Through his creative networks and large community of social media followers, Mr.Slowboy shares his unique vintage and retro style creations with a modern touch. Inspired by The May Fair, A Radisson Collection Hotel, Mayfair London’s strong fashion heritage as the official hotel for London Fashion Week, Mr.Slowboy has created detailed illustrations that depict characters in everyday situations wearing different outfits to fit the occasion, whether a special evening dinner, or relaxing in one of the hotel’s award-winning suites.

It’s rather a random by-product when I was trying to insert images to demonstrate the styling of garments I wanted to discuss or comment on, because I felt it was wrong to just grab images from the internet without any authorisation. I therefore decided to draw them myself as illustrations.
