So, what's the verdict of my Remington Proluxe You Adaptive Straightener review? If you’re looking for a smart straightener that knows how to give you smooth, sleek hair fast, then this is worth every single penny. It glides through their hair easily with no snagging, and the results are long-lasting. You will need to be a little patient though, as it does take a few uses for the straighteners to fully adapt to your hair’s needs. When you turn the straightener on for the first time, it automatically defaults to StyleAdapt1 mode. Then, as you work through the hair section by section the sensor strip in the center of the plates starts getting to know your hair. The little icon on the display panel spins as you style, indicating that it’s learning what your hair needs and adjusting the temperature accordingly. The sensors can read the hair temperature up to 2,500 times in a single styling session, but neither the current temperature (nor any changes to the temperature) are shown on the display.

I’m a bit of a control freak, so although it’s the key selling point of the styler, I personally didn’t love relinquishing control of the heat settings in the adaptive mode. As I do use heat regularly, I want to keep split ends to a minimum so tend to use my straighteners on a hotter setting after washing, and then on a cooler one for touch-ups in between. As you can get quite a lot of hair between the plates at once, it took around 15 minutes to fully straighten my shoulder-length hair in four sections. I was impressed with the results: shiny hair that felt soft and silky with just a small amount of static. I’ve had this kind of result from straighteners before, only to find that I have fluffy and frizzy hair come lunchtime, but these really did go the distance, and my hair was just as satisfyingly sleek by evening. A major issue with the original range of steam straighteners was the fact they would leave your face or ears a bit wet, and the steam could sometimes feel a little hot next to the skin. Revamp’s model doesn’t have either of these flaws because the steam is directed straight onto the plates and over the hair more evenly, and in a more targeted way. With the straightener comes a heat resistant plate guard that fits over the top of the tool. White quite handy, the heat does seep through leaving the guard hot to the touch, and a mat might be preferable while styling.This Remington comes with a chic travel bag but no heat pad. That's a shame since the straighteners are hot to the touch after a few minutes of use. Other than that, though, no complaints. This straightener doesn’t have a swivel cord, but the cord is long enough not to get in the way and, besides, the way this straightener felt on our hair, it was hardly noticeable. Trust us. The 'Ultimate Glide' ceramic coated plates do exactly what it says on the tin. They glided effortlessly over our hair and its possible this is the smoothest straightener we’ve ever used. It felt nothing short of professional and, despite the lower price point, should be considered luxury. There was absolutely zero snagging, making this the most comfortable straightener on this list too. Our testers liked using the Pro+ function, as it didn’t overheat the hair but was still effective at styling. It left hair shinier and feeling “silky smooth”, with all of the panel agreeing that their hair looked healthier after using the straighteners. The variable temperature functions made it suitable for those with different hair types and our testers were happy with the heat-up time. The styler was lightweight and most agreed that one swipe was enough to produce satisfactory results. Key Specifications We were a little dismayed to find ourselves going over sections multiple times, as this might counter any protective benefits from the aforementioned features, but the GHD finish was still as glossy as you’d hope for the price. The straightener heats up in exactly 15 seconds and automatically switches off after 30 minutes, just in case you forget. The ceramic floating plates have sensors which monitor heat 250 times a second – 2.5 faster than the Dysons – to help protect your hair and minimise damage. The 2.7 metre cord is long enough not to be irritating and the 360°C swivel feature, combined with the wishbone-shaped handle, make this tool a winner on ergonomics. Side note: the rounded tip is perfect for curling as well as straightening.

While not as techy as other straighteners, the PROLuxe is glamorously good and delivers perfect results instantly – one swipe of each section and you’re finished. It comes with a heat resistant guard similar to the GHDs which, again, might be better as a heat mat. Still, despite only doing the basics, these are definitely the best value for money straighteners you can buy right now.The cord is 2.5 metres long and has a 360°C spin feature, meaning that the cord doesn’t get tangled up in the straightener as you go. This makes using it extremely easy and makes for a perfect hair curling tool. Accessory-wise, this straightener come with a transparent, square heating mat (great if you don’t have fluff on your floor) and a travel bag, so portability isn’t a question. There is the option to move the mode to StyleAdapt2, a second profile that means someone else can personalize the straightener to their hair type without overriding your settings. This hair straightener has a function that sets the temperature to 185C, which the brand says helps create healthy and shiny hair minus the guilt from daily styling. It's designed to target heat where the hair needs it most and Remington says the results should last up to 24 hours, too. The hot plates are ceramic-coated and “ultra-smooth” to avoid snagging and are supposed to deliver 5x smoother results than your standard ceramic straighteners. It also has nine heat settings, going up to 230C. On paper, it also doesn’t appear to offer much versatility in terms of temperature settings but this is the same across the entire GHD range because 185°C is, according to the brand, the optimum temperature to achieve maximum styling ability with minimal hair damage. It’s also a shame that GHD has relied on an older version of its dual-zone sensor technology, taken from the mid-range GHD Gold, instead of the ultra-zone technology seen on the hair brand’s flagship model, the Platinum Plus (below). In reality, this seemingly means very little to the performance of the Unplugged, and its ability to protect our hair while styling. Certainly not to a noticeable extent. Yet when paying a premium price, you expect premium technology. The Remington S1400 Ceramic straightener features ceramic coated plates that heat up to a maximum temperature of 210ºC it only 30 seconds, meaning you don’t have to wait around to straighten your hair! The straighteners also boast worldwide voltage so there’s no need to skip on your style routine wherever you are in the world, plus the 1.8 metre swivel cord gives you easy maneuverability. This is not necessarily a performance metric, but a big plus for anxious types like me is that these stylers automatically turn off after 60 minutes of not being used for extra peace of mind. What’s not so good about them?Remington’s 'OPTIheat' technology targets heat where your hair most needs it, which delivers genuine long-lasting results and the PRO+ setting keeps the temperature at a responsible 185°C to protect your hair. It takes the concept of the original Babyliss models and gives it a modern twist. Floating ceramic plates infused with keratin, argan and coconut oils, as well as ionic technology, help create a glossy, smooth finish. It uses so-called “intelligent heat control” to regulate the temperature across these plates and reduce hair damage. You can then choose from one of six temperatures (150ºC, 170ºC, 190ºC, 210ºC, 220ºC and 230ºC) and from one of three modes ( No Steam, Low Steam and High Steam). The straighteners will then automatically switch off after an hour. The use of steam opens the hair follicle. This lets moisture in while straightening or curling and makes steam straighteners typically less harsh and drying, particularly on curly or more delicate hair types. Our models were impressed with how glossy and defined their hair looked after using the Revamp Progloss Steamcare and after a fortnight of use, many said their hair felt softer and seemed to be in better condition overall. This is hotter than I would usually go (for reference, my GHD Platinum+ hair straightener is set at 185°C) and I haven’t yet tested for long enough to see how this would impact the health of my hair. It is a catch-22 situation, as I would need to pass over each section of hair multiple times using these straighteners at lower temperatures, compared to just one pass at a higher heat setting.For these reasons, I’d be likely to switch between adaptive and manual modes.
