Although the design has since become synonymous with the legendary Welsh warrior, its origins are unclear. On the 600th anniversary of Glyndŵr's Welsh Revolt in 2000, celebrations took place across Wales including Ruthin, where the uprising against the English had begun in 1400. Until the last decade of the 14th century, Owain Glyndwr was a man of the March, having married into a leading Marcher family and become the epitome of an assimilated Welshman. It is around this stage of Glyndŵr's life that Hywel Sele, a cousin of the Welsh prince, attempted to assassinate Glyndŵr at the Nannau estate. The main standard of the Wessex Saxons was a gold dragon, which they carried at the battle of Burford in 752.
