Once I started reading, I was utterly transfixed by the character of Marion. The story is told from her P.O.V and the author, Catherine Burns, does a phenomenal job of bringing Marion and John to life. Marion is a character that will stay with me for a long time, and I don't say that often. She grew up with a strict mother that still brow beats her (even though mom is dead now) and John, the brother, is a raging ogre. He vacillates between syrupy concern for Marion and lashing out at her in anger over trivialities. The Last Boy to Leave is a heartbreaking short story and probably my favourite within the book. After relocating to a new area, Jen and Greg decide to throw their son Max a birthday party in their home. It soon descends into chaos with kids, running around everywhere, practically destroying the house and ignoring all Jen’s rules. Yet one young boy stops and helps Jen to clean and tidy, he’s polite and kind, yet something is not quite right about him. The Visitors Book is a story about Victoria and her strange partner Aaron who get into a huge row when she refuses to sign the visitors' book at his London flat. Although from the short glance Victoria had at the book, there is something rather peculiar about the names in it, soon Victoria realises she could be in danger. On one occasion when she was 16 and returning to her school in Paris after a visit home, she was accompanied by Winston Churchill and his son Randolph who were en route to Rome for a meeting with Mussolini, whom Churchill admired at that time. Randolph always adored her, although the beautiful Diana never took him seriously.

Their story is told through the narratives of the characters, interspersed with Esme's newspaper articles on the flora and fauna, and excerpts from the memoirs of one of the male war veterans.This is a flat out, in-depth character study of an elderly brother and sister, Marion and John. Sounds so sweet and innocent, right? No. Nothing about Marion and John is ordinary or sweet or traditional. They live together in a crumbling mansion that is overrun with rotting garbage, old stuffed animals and horrific secrets.
