If there is such a thing as a bible on how to program your BBSHD, its Karl Gesslein’s blog post on the subject ( read it here). This is all you need to swap out your aging BBS01 or BBS02 with the latest and greatest drive unit from Bafang, the BBSHD 750w.

WARNING: This BBSHD 1000W motor kit is SERIOUSLY POWERFUL! Technically speaking it is only for off-road and private property use. Some riders are able to achieve speeds of 40+mph! Our 750W BBS02 motors meet the power needs and wants of the majority of riders. It is your responsibility as the rider to follow applicable local and federal traffic and ebike laws. Consider yourselves forewarned. This is another setting that helps govern how fast the motor shuts off when you stop pedaling. Zero milliseconds sounds good to me. Stop Delay determines how fast a motor begins its shutdown after you stop pedaling. Stop Decay determines how fast it fully shuts down after the shutdown begins. Keep Current What this translates to is the BBSHD will produce more torque, have better heat dissipation (and reliability?) and produce more peak power. Bafang BBS02 vs BBSHD Power Comparison Bafang Model This mid drive motor is made by Bafang, and often distributed as an “8fun” motor. They’re the same thing. Remove the old 9 -10=11 speed cassette and use the gear range from 15T to lowest gear. We love the Shimano XT CS-M771-10 speed cassette as shown in the photo. Use spacers to give you a perfect chain line for the gear of your choice. For 27.5 and 29er set ups we recommend a 28T rear gear. For 26″ wheels a 26″ T gear. For fat bikes as big as you can get! (32T +)

Hot Rodding A BBSHD

The motor is built to take much more than the 30A that it is limited to. In fact, Luna Cycle sell controllers that can handle 60A and up to 72V like this one here! As with all the other Bafang mid-drive motors, this uses an internal cadence sensor and gives electric assist based on pedalling rpm. The pedal assist is very responsive, and with 9 power levels to choose from, you can fine-tune the power output to suit your ride.

Plus using the sine wave Adappto the motor should run more efficient and cooler than running a Chinese square wave ebike controller. Modifying kit bikes are in many ebikers blood same as some guys like to hot rod their cars. Until recently you could not buy an ebike kit with decent power. A lot of guys spend a lot of time on endless-sphere searching for the holy grail of electric bikes that we know can never be bought ready-to-ride. So what is the holy grail of ebikes? Thats an easy equation: The holy grail of electric bikes Having done some experimentation, with the wider throttle delivered by the End Voltage setting of 42, a Start Current of 2 is my preference. Set to 10, the least throttle I can deliver is about 150w or about 1-1.5a (using an 860C display set to display both values simultaneously). Set Start Current to 5 and that minimum value is about 50w and 0.5a. Set it to 2 and its even less. Plus more importantly it wipes out any stress on the drivetrain from throttle use. Wrapping it all up… Karl blew out his nylon gear which may very well be the weak point in the bbshd, and he did so riding at top speed until his drive got hot and seemed to have melted the gear. and relaxing. I'm looking forward to my next ride already, and know I'm going to use it so much more.

So once we had ridden the bike it was obvious we were going to have to make some changes if we were gonna claim the most awesome bbshd ever. The Adappto does an automatic configuring the first time you run it to a motor which makes it a helluva lot easier to get up and running. A choice of LCD displays, but do be aware that the C961 allows up to 50km/h and the C965 allows 99km/h, max speed. For sure if the rider is careful how he applies throttle and monitors temperature this could be a reliable machine. These are settings that can automatically be programmed in the Adappto which offer not only high temperature shut down but also throttle mapping so the power never comes off jerky which could shred a gear.
