I Know What You Did Last Summer was first published in October 1973 by Little, Brown and Company in hardcover. [1] Duncan got the idea for the book while she was making dinner and her daughter Kerry was having a conversation with a friend in the kitchen. Kerry told her friend about a boy that interested her, and her friend was considering what to wear on her upcoming date. The two eventually found out they were talking about the same boy. Duncan began to wonder what would happen if "the boy had deliberately implanted himself in the lives of two girls he knew were friends" and if "he built up a different personality to present to each of them". [2] Duncan later read a story about a hit-and-run in the newspaper, which led her to incorporate one into the novel. [3]In the book, Barry is shot in the stomach, however he does live. He is just hospital bound for the rest of the book. Helen is threatened by the brother and he reveals who he is. She gets away from him by jumping out her window on the second floor but survives. In the movie, Barry is hit by a car and is in the hospital but is released soon. He is later killed. Helen is being chased by the fisherman and jumps out of a window like in the book. However, she too ultimately is killed. Her sister Elsa is also killed in the movie. In both book and movie, Elsa is shown to not be very nice and in the book, Julie even suspects she might be involved, but nothing really happens with her. Writing: I read the second version of the book, which was re-written, so there is no other more to say that you will be reading a classic writing with “new” fashion vocabulary. I decided to listen to the audiobook in this case as well. It was read by the same narrator and I liked his style. Some changes were necessary -- indeed, the fundamental twist in the book couldn't (readily) be replicated on screen -- but readers should be aware that the film is quite fundamentally different.
