There are certainly better primers in print today, but few books are more interesting than is The Soviet Chess Primer.Though this book does begin with the basic rules of chess--and even teaches the reader how to read the book because it takes the time to explain algebraic chess notation right at the start--it quickly moves on to more advanced tactical and strategic ideas. Take, for instance, this ‘ancient puzzle’ (72) used to illustrate the restriction of piece mobility. Such high regard may be surprising for an American audience, for whom Ilya Maizelis is something of a mystery.

Really excellent book, found it useful after coming back to chess after a break, interspersed with key ideas and principles for all parts of your game. Well illustrated and explained games to showcase the essential principles (tactics, strategy, combinations, positional play) to apply to every chess game.The translation by John Sugden reads well, and – as one expects from Quality Chess – the production values are high. Garry Kasparov and Anatoli Karpov (former legendary world champions) have both praised it having learned from it when they were schoolboys. The breakneck pace of the book and the complex examples preclude me from thinking it appropriate for the beginner.
