I have a lot of thoughts about this book that are neither good nor bad -- but rather thoughts about what the book is and what it isn't, and who might enjoy it. I'll share them for that specific reason...so that people who might like it can find it. lots of (real) technical, military, and scientific jargon and explanations (which I love because it's all so authentic and immersive, but your mileage may vary)

Estevar closed his eyes a moment, allowing the eerie echoes to surround him. The voice was deep, confident, but that gravitas was trained rather than natural. The accent – most notably the rising inflection on the last vowel of the abbey’s name, almost as if he were saying ‘Som–brae’ – suggested a commoner raised in this duchy, not highborn himself, but accustomed to being in the presence of nobles. Summing up then, Artifact Space made my inner Spacer beam. It starts fast but held my attention throughout, bringing new ideas to traditional SF. This is a paean to all the old SFnal tropes of old but with a brand spanking new upgrade. I couldn’t put it down. Simply brilliant and easily one of my books of the year. Another aspect of Artifact Space I enjoyed was that – as one would expect on a massive ship hurtling through space – the book is somewhat episodic. It's not one long, drawn-out singular problem (though there is a mystery that threads the entire narrative), but more the ongoing adventures of Marca NBaro and the crew of the Greatship Athens. If that sounds like a pitch for this to be a television series, it is; I really, really want to see this as a TV show that sits somewhere between Star Trek the Next Generation and The Expanse.

It starts well and promising! But... A lot of filler in boring trainings (a lot of sword practice - in a Space Opera not named "Star Wars. Then we have the protagonist: usually you would like her: the teenager, who suffered at an orphanage and gets the oportunity of a lifetime! But the author REALLY want you to like her: a math genius, a brilliant pilot from her first flight, a mastermind in espionage and saves the ship a lot of times - with ideas that veterans, a powerfull IA and the Augmented Humans on the ship never tought!

Much of the book is about how Marca rises to the numerous challenges through the ranks of the Athens. At the beginning we find that Marca has been thrown out of cadet training because of the influence of a member of one of the great families. Nevertheless, she has managed to sneak on board the Athens with a false identity as a lowly ‘middie’. She spends much of the first part of the book feeling like an imposter and unworthy of her placing, but over time she manages to show potential and makes the most of the opportunities given to her whilst aboard the Greatship. The military structure that the Athens society works upon is clearly something Marca needs in her troubled life and she is determined to make the most of it, which to me echoes the Heinlein juveniles or something like David Weber’s Honor Harrington series. The message is carried by a phonograph record – -a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds and images selected to show the diversity of life and culture on Earth. The contents of the record were selected for NASA by a committee chaired by space scientist and popularizer Carl Sagan. He and his associates assembled 115 images and a variety of natural sounds to give a sense of what Earth and Earthlings are like. I had to lean against him just to keep from collapsing to the ground. Poetic injustice spells are hard on the body. And the soul, I guess.
