We also like that it has a lightweight cylinder that can be lifted from the main body for easier stair cleaning, which helps solve a common issue for upright vacs. There are several accessories included with the Vax U85-AS-Pme Air Stretch. These aren’t the highest quality tools we’ve reviewed, but are good enough for most tasks. The U85-AS-Pme (the model reviewed in this article) is the pet version of the Air Reach, so it comes with a pet turbo tool. The U85-AS-Be is similar in most respects, but doesn’t have a turbo tool. The Vax does a decent job of cleaning carpets, due to the strong suction and motorised brush bar. Don’t expect it to match upright vacuums costing twice as much, but it’s no slouch and the difference in performance isn’t as big as you would expect.

Important: Always unplug and turn off the vacuum cleaner before performing maintenance or troubleshooting. A downside is that the U85-AS-Pme doesn’t come with Vax’s “Steerable” technology. While it’s relatively lightweight, we still think there are more mobile options for manoeuvring around the home. If you’re looking for a vacuum that’s easy to manoeuvre around the home, a Vax Steerable, Dyson Ball or Shark Swivel model would be better. Let’s take a closer look at the Vax U85-AS-Pme design, performance, and ease of use. Appearance, Features & DesignIt’s also a lightweight upright vacuum. Upright vacs tend to be heavier than other types, but the Vax weighs just 5kg, making it more convenient to carry up and down stairs. As both models are similarly priced, we don’t see any reason to buy the basic version. The pet tool is useful for everyone, regardless of whether you have pets or not. The Vax is a multi-cyclonic bagless vacuum, which (in theory) means it shouldn’t lose suction. It also has a motorised brush bar, which can be switched off for hard floors, along with a turbo pet tool for cleaning awkward areas. We found that the Vax Air Lift Steerable Pet provides strong all-round performance for the price – particularly for people with cats or dogs. It’s never going to match the best upright vacuums for cleaning performance, but we think it’s hard to beat in this price range. The Vax U85-AS-Pme is part of the “Air Stretch” range. Vax vacuums in the Air Stretch series all have long power cords, but, unlike the Air Lift range, don’t have a lift-away cylinder. As you would expect from a vacuum cleaner in this price range, there are a few downsides to the Vax Mach Air Revive though. While it’s a solid option for cleaning carpets and great for pet hair, it’s less effective on hard floors. We also would have liked a longer power cord, as the seven-metre cord feels restrictive.Other features include a turbo tool, which is great for getting rid of pet hair in upholstery, and a 3-in-1 accessory. It doesn’t come with a HEPA filter though – for that you’ll need the Air Lift Advance model. If the bearings on the end of the brushbar have seized, you won’t be able to turn it at all. This will often result in a broken belt as well, so be aware of this. The Vax Mach Air Revive UCA2GEV1 is another budget upright vacuum. We’ve included it on this list as it does a great job of removing pet hair and is decent at cleaning carpets, making it a solid choice in this price range. We like that the vacuum is lightweight and easy to use. At just 5kg, it’s close to being suitable for our lightweight category. It also comes with a HEPA filter, which is useful if anyone in the household suffers from allergies.This is the “Pet” version, which means it comes with a pet turbo tool. For comparison, the standard Air Stretch (U85-AS-Be) has many of the same features but doesn’t come with a pet tool. Instead of trying to compete with premium cordless vacuum cleaners, most of Vax’s cordless models are at the lower end of the price spectrum. This doesn’t mean they aren’t worth buying though – and the Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet is one of the best examples of Vax’s cordless vacuums that we’ve reviewed so far. In terms of maneuverability, the Vax Air Stretch Pet Max features a lightweight design and swivel steering, allowing for easy navigation around furniture and other obstacles. It also has a low profile, making it convenient for cleaning under furniture. Remove the lid and lift the filter out of the top of the dirt container, tap to get all of the dust off. As the pet turbo tool attaches to the hose, the Vax provides excellent cleaning performance on stairs. It’s easy to clean both sides of a step, which isn’t the case for uprights without a pet tool.

The Air Lift Steerable Pet is one of the most popular Vax models on the market – and for good reason. It’s highly versatile, due to its attachments and removable canister, plus it has powerful suction (especially considering the price). A bonus is that the vacuum is easy to empty, although the open design means we don’t recommend it for allergy sufferers. The Vax is a relatively simple vacuum cleaner. There aren’t advanced features, such as headlights or pivoting floorheads, but it’s a solid vacuum that’s designed to be straightforward and effective.

This adds to the lifetime cost of the vacuum cleaner. You’ll also need to regularly clean the pre-motor filter to ensure the vacuum continues to be effective. Emptying & Cleaning Place your hand over the hole located on the top right hand side of the machine, this is where the lid of the dirt container is normally attached to. We think the Air Stretch Max Pet provides excellent value for money. It’s not the best vacuum for cleaning carpets that we’ve reviewed, but it still does a decent job at removing dirt, hair and other debris. The Vax is also excellent for cleaning hard floors and has a huge cleaning radius, which we think makes it more convenient than many other uprights. In summary, we think the Air Lift Steerable Pet is one of the best Vax vacuum cleaners on the market at the moment. It’s especially good if you have a cat, dog or other pet. The turbo tool is perfect for removing pet hair, but it also excels at almost any other cleaning job and the detachable canister makes vacuuming stairs much easier.
