There’s quite a logical progression between the different dreams, and then she draws something else as a consequence of that dream, and then theres another dream and the consequences of what she’s just drawn are revealed. She is currently on maternity leave, using available time (when her daughter naps) to redraft her new novel. The ever-encircling stones gave me nightmares but still I watched and Marrianne was given an indelible pen at one point so she couldn't erase her drawings! I am reminded of the final book in Tove Jansson’s Moomin series, “Moominvalley in November”, in which the Moomins themselves are absent having gone to live in a lighthouse* on a remote island in the previous novel (“Moominpappa At Sea”). It has actually been given a 12 rating in the UK, showing how such drama would probably be considered too disturbing to be shown a teatime nowadays. But then when they turn it on — well, we haven’t talked about THEM yet, but anyway, it’s a sinister radio.

They would certainly recognise the concept of two people inhabiting an alternative reality, to them it's just like Cyberspace. Marianne Dreams is recommended for children of seven and above, but there were times when it scared your reviewer half to death, and even after a good night's sleep it still haunts me. Marianne Dreams has been the basis of several film, TV and radio adaptations, including the 1972 British ITV children's TV series Escape Into Night (which was quite faithful to the novel), and the movie Paperhouse (which was less so). The Marianne of the title is a girl convalescing after a serious illness, which keeps her bored and bedridden for many weeks.But it doesn’t work, and we never see Fiona come to visit her while she’s sick; Marianne tries to have connections with her able-bodied friend, but both irl and in the dream world, Fiona isn’t there.
