Collection capacity is also an important feature, as it relates to how often you’ll be emptying the container! Medium to large gardens will need a collection box of 45 litres and above . For smaller gardens, 25 to 40 litres will do. The four working height settings are -15mm, -11mm, -7mm, and +1mm, and can be adjusted by lever with only one hand. The BMC scarifier/aerator also has a large working width if 32cm.
Accidental starts are very unlikely with this model thanks to a two stage safety operation switch. Although the fact that the machine tips over instead of standing upright could be considered a safety issue, AL-KO has taken other steps to make this machine as safe as possible. It’s the only lawn rake and scarifier I tested that has a special light to tell you if the roller isn’t inserted correctly, and it’s also equipped with a safety button that needs to be pressed before you can pull the trigger. That said, the safety button and the trigger are spaced so far away from each other that you’ll need to use two hands each time you want to turn the machine on, which is pretty awkward.The Flymo lawnrake has been designed to be compact and the foldable handles help make it easy to store away. It measures 66 x 46.6 x 39 cm and weighs 12.3 kilograms.
The 12 metre cable length is longer than average and the extra few metres comes in handy. A 35 litre, easily detachable collection bag should keep you from having to stop and empty too often and the 10 metre cable is more than enough for most average gardens. It helped that the bag was already assembled, which I very much appreciated. All that needed to be done was attach the handles (you’ll need a Philip’s screwdriver for this), as well as the trigger. I did find this a little odd, as the other scarifiers I reviewed had their triggers pre-attached. Petrol lawn scarifiers are powerful, versatile and great for large lawns. Available as either corded, where you’ll need a power supply, or cordless, these have knife blades attached to their cylinders rather than tines, making them effective at removing moss and thatch. Used on the lowest setting, they create slits in the turf, which helps aerate it.

The scarifier roller has 3 stage steel blades and does a good job of removing thatch and turning over soil thanks to the 1300W motor. The steel spring times on the lawn raker roller also work efficiently.

We sell scarifiers and tillers from many of the world’s leading brands including Bosch, Mac Allister, VonHaus, and Hyundai. The drum on this scarifier isn’t removable, unlike the other models I tested, so it can only be used as a scarifier (not an aerator as well). However, it performs this one function efficiently; it lifts moss and thatch from the lawn and is a great option for maintenance. It doesn’t cut quite as deeply as some of the other machines that I reviewed, such as the Einhell, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Not every lawn needs intense scarification!
