Sir Walter Scott died in September of 1832. He was buried next to his wife at Dryburgh Abbey. Scott had suffered a stroke the year before his death and many monetary struggles the previous years which left him in debt even after death. Before he died, Scott wrote many novels, the proceeds of which would go to his creditors, in hopes of eventually paying off said debts with his books. This worked, and Scott's novels saved his estate from being overtaken by creditors, placing it into the hands of his family. Influence The ability of the British Government to fight wars was based on its ability to finance them. The development of an efficient national f Scott is often seen as an ultra- romantic novelist but this was a misreading. David Daiches said “Scott’s best and characteristic novels might with justice be called anti-romantic. They attempt to show that heroic action is, in the last analysis, neither heroic nor useful”. Daiches argued that Scott’s real interest as a novelist was “in the ways in which the past impinged on the present and in the effects of that impact on human character, in the relations between tradition and progress”. These themes were best realised in the novels dealing with the Scotland of the not too distant past of the C17th and C18th, ie Waverley, Guy Mannering, The Antiquary, Old Mortality, Rob Roy, The Heart of Midlothian, The Bride of Lammermoor, A Legend of Montrose, Redgauntlet and Chronicles of the Canongate.

Their association develops into deep affection on both sides, a mutual attraction marred only by the fact that Diana is a Catholic and Frank a Presbyterian. That's because major historical events provided the skeleton to all of Scott's work. So, for those of us who might be unfamiliar with Scotland's tumultuous history, some of these conflicts with their many political and religious allegiances can be hard to follow - it's true. If anything, though, that should give you an idea of the grand scope of Scott's novels. He had his sights set on these really major events that had a big impact on his country's history. He liked important characters and sweeping action. Will Francis shine in his dire assignment? Will he save his Dad's good name from the deep blue opprobrium of bankruptcy? And - most important - will his ladylove find him every inch as dashing in the end as he dreams he could be?

The first great author of historical romances, Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771. After graduating from Edinburgh University, he was admitted to the bar in 1792. From 1799 until his death in 1832, he was sheriff of Selkirkshire, and from 1806-30 he was also principal clerk to the chief Scottish civil court. In addition, from 1805 on, Scott was a secret and controlling investor in the Ballantyne brothers’ printing businesses. The beautiful Diana Vernon, another cousin of Frank, is the love interest. She is mysteriously unattainable due to obligations previously arranged by her father. It became kind of comical for me as the plot advances that at three different times she protests that Frank...must never see her again, but the daffy woman just keeps showing up. Rob Roy is a historical novel narrated by Frank Osbaldistone, the son of an English merchant. He travels first to the North of England, and subsequently to the Scottish Highlands, to collect a debt stolen from his father. On the way he encounters the larger-than-life title character, Rob Roy MacGregor. Though Rob Roy is not the lead character, his personality and actions are key to the novel's development. The Tales of my Landlord sub-series was not advertised as "by the author of Waverley" and thus is not always included as part of the Waverley Novels series.
