I always thought that if they rated the power at say 2W into 32Ω, it would automatically mean that it would output even more power into 16 Ω and less into higher impedances but I guess that's not the case?

low power. use switch power supply so it won't produce a lot of heat. sleep mode should not consume > 0.5W. The main difference lies in the naturalness of the timbre and the more musical character of the DX5 when compared to the EX5. particularly in light of their cost. But the EX5 is a step in the right direction, for 350 you get a sturdy build neutral and powerful performance MQA Bluetooth and plenty of outputs for most people. After running the EX5 as a DAC/Amp, I tried upgrading the amp section by connecting the balanced outputs of the EX5 into my Burson Soloist 3X. This resulted in a mostly similar tonal balance. However, there are some marked improvements brought about by replacing the EX5’s amplifier section. regarding the jitter measurements, amir/wolf's measurements also show it has a less ideal jitter performance, especially compared to their d10B, and is mentioned in my review as well.

Sound Impressions

Volume range on high/low gain​The volume range isn't super wide and they stay pretty conservative which means most headphones will get in the higher 60-90 range on high gain. Using my sensitive iems, the lowest volume I would use for maybe sleep didn’t happen till 22 on low gain and 15 on high gain. My aeon 2 noire, which is my current hardest to drive full size can, didn’t even produce volume on low gain till 25 on low gain and 18 on high gain. I almost maxed out the Aeon 2 on low gain. I would prefer a higher range of volume but the tradeoff was that I got no floor noise from high gain on anything I used with the EX5. By default, the screen on the EX5 is empty save for information on the input currently being played. Turning the volume knob will first show the sample rate, and then subsequent turns will change the volume levels. Going into the mid-bass, the quantity of the mid-bass is sufficient, but not overblown. However, each drum hit reproduced in the mid-bass tends to be a bit less rounded and controlled than I have come to expect.

The screen on the EX5 and the D30 Pro is pretty much the same as well, where the numbers and the displays are pretty much the same. The menu system and the remote control used on both devices are also the same, so it’s possible to operate both the EX5 and the D30 Pro using the same remote control. Sound(overall)​These final impressions were done off the Topping EX5 with no external amp usage. This will be what the EX5 sounded like with all the headphones I used. Things like headphone pairings or using different external amps will produce different results and impressions vs what my ears hear on my specific gear.

So for people use XLR output, the + and - signal is getting from chips for different purposes. Also for people who connect XLR and RCA simultaneously, remember they are powered by the same buffer. With the mid-bass hump complementing the more subdued mid-bass on the EX5. The richer midrange presentation on the HD600 on the other hand shone through despite the upper midrange recession on the EX5. I think this is a great product, I think it's somewhat of a no-brainer if you were looking for a more affordable dac. And you also want a headphone amp for a desktop solution if you're just in the headphones this is great personally for me I like this for two channel listening with a variable output. You can use the EX5 as a digital preamp into a standalone amplifier, whatever it is, this is your volume control if you're only using digital inputs. Using the included remote control, the menu options can be accessed. One of these menu options is the output mode, which can be changed from O-H, O-1 to O-3. These are different outputs that will either use the EX5 as a headphone amplifier or have different combinations of pre-outs, which include single-ended only, XLR only, or both. Neatly hidden in a miniaturized cut-out using the same shape as the device is a white OLED display, though the screen itself is much smaller upon examining.

The unit is very configurable with multiple options such as digital filter selection, gain setting, volume db step, auto standby mode and more.While the performance is certainly satisfying and excellent for an all-in-one solution without the hassle of an external amplifier, you can do a lot better. I'm in the market for a DAC/HPAMP combo which will be used mainly as a DAC/PREAMP for my ADAM T8V studio monitors which I will be using for watching movies on my TV, house parties and sometimes for headphone listening sessions on my computer desk. Having done some research, it seems my best two options are either the Topping EX5 or the DX5 models. Internally, the 2 devices use different DACs to power their DAC sections. The XA-10 uses a pair of AK4493 DAC chips, while the EX5 uses a pair of ES9038Q2M DACs.
