Grubbs seems to be the weakest in constitution of the three parts of the Kah-Gash. This is shown by his stint in a mental institution after seeing the recently murdered corpses of his family (being as it's commonly stated that he actually saw the murders of his family even though he didn't witness them being killed). He also seems to have many emotional problems. He is shown many times lying to those he is close to, often only to protect himself. He also has problems sharing his fears even with people he supposedly trusts, evidence that he is paranoid, even more so than his uncle who calls himself a "real paranoid freak". It also seems that Grubbs mistrusts his uncle more than most,in l ight of the fact that on several occasions, especially Book 5 ( Blood Beast), he suspects his uncle of being dangerous.

Always Chaotic Evil: The demons are universally depicted as cruel, monstrous savages whose sole purpose is to exterminate humanity out of pure hatred. Lord Loss, despite being the Big Bad, turns out to be an exception. He has an interest in keeping humans alive so he can feed on their pain, whereas other demons just want to kill them all. The next day... I couldn't put the book down, i devoured it completely, and finished it. Who would have ever imagined it after my reactions with the beginning!! Mum's staring at me with open disgust. There are some disturbing/violent scenes throughout which are described in great detail so if you really hate gore I'd suggest skipping, but if you don't particularly mind gore I'd give it a go as it does feature a good story.Don't make jokes like that!" [2] The novel is set in Ireland and is told in present tense first person through Grubbs Grady, a child whose family are all chess players.

The first quarter was pretty gross. The protagonist, Grubbs Grady is a spoiled kid(or so I think) is caught smoking. His mom is furious- blah...blah...blah.... He gets off. In solitude, I call Gret every name under the moon the first night. Mum and Dad bear the brunt of my curses the next. After that I'm too miserable to blame anyone, so I sulk in moody silence and play chess against myself to pass the time.As a massive fan of the Darren Shan saga I had high expectations for this series, I was pleased to discover that the first book - Lord Loss well and truly lived up to all of these! A suprise in a way that it was so uniquely different from everything I have ever read that I found myself reading it entirely through in the one sitting. I was not able to put it down. I must say, I do still find that my favorite of Darren Shan's series is The Darren Shan Saga, but only one book in it would be a little biased of me to be saying this. At the moment, I will be most certainly rushing out to buy the books after this one, a deffinant must-read for all fans of horror. Loophole Abuse: In Slawter Davida Haym makes a deal with Lord Loss, that in exchange for handing over the Gradys to him, he promised that he'd allow her crew to film how his minions commit a slaughter. He didn't promise her crew would be spared, while they made the film. The kitchen's cold. It shouldn't be - the sun's been shining all day and it's a nice warm night -but it's like standing in a refrigerator aisle in a supermarket.

Will Not Tell a Lie: Lord Loss makes a point of never lying, but he tends to speak in half-truths when it suits him. Do you think it's clever? Filling your lungs with rubbish, killing yourself? We didn't bring you up to watch you give yourself cancer! We don't need this, certainly not at this time, not when - " Grubbs Grady - on his way out? A deadly disease I caught on holiday? A brain defect I've had since birth? The big, bad cancer bug?

Hope Spot: Inverted in the sixth book. We witness what happens when a tunnel is actually opened, but time is reset to before it happens. Beranabus, the ancient magician who had been raised in the minotaur’s labyrinth and had been a fast-running but reticent boy in Bec’s time. Lord Loss is a young adult book, so it’s got all the YA stuff that you’d expect—Grubbs trying to fit into his new school, making friends, struggling with the trauma of what happened to him. There are problems with the book, Darren Shan struggles in places to write dialogue for a young teenager, for instance, but I found myself overlooking these issues. That’s in large to the characters and the world that he created.

Gret appears before they reach the stairs. Crashes out of her room, screaming, slapping bloody shreds from her arms, tearing them from her hair. She's covered in red. Towel clutched with one hand over her front - even terrified out of her wits, there's no way she's going to come down naked! In Lord Loss, the title character is first seen killing the family of our protagonist, Grubbs, accompanied by Vein and Artery. Using his power to cure lycanthropy, a game of chess is instigated against him by Dervish. Dervish rushes to save Grubbs when he's threatened, then Grubbs takes his place and makes a bad game worse. But once he notices that Lord Loss is feeding off his misery and desperation, he puts on a disinterested façade and storms to victory. Because of Grubbs' insults to both the game of Chess and Lord Loss himself, Lord Loss vows to make the Gradys suffer, a vow that intensifies in venom as the series progresses.All Therapists Are Muggles: Averted. In between Lord Loss and Slawter, Dervish sees a therapist who already knows about demons. However, his experiences in Lord Loss's realm are so completely horrible that the therapist is scared off anyway.
