A grin was plastered on his face, revealing misshapen teeth stained an unbecoming yellow.’ Murder at the Theatre Royale by Ada Moncrieff belongs to a genre I have only recently become aware of – variously described as cosy crime, cosy mysteries and in this case cosy Christmas crime! Playwright (and pantomime dame to boot) Philip Meeks has history at York Theatre Royal in the form of Twinkle, Little Star, starring Nottingham Playhouse panto legend Kenneth Alan Taylor in the Studio in 2008 and the 2017 world premiere of Murder, Margaret and Me, his comedy-thriller of imagined meetings between crime novelist and playwright Agatha Christie and actress Margaret Rutherford.The book has all the hallmarks of an excellent story. The theatre world in particular, lends itself to colourful characters, secrets and intrigue. I was also drawn to the beautiful book cover and the fact it was labelled “A Christmas Mystery”, looking forward to a seasonal escape from reality. Midsomer Murders came to mind as I finished this book. Everything is well explained to the assembled cast at the denouement but really, anyone could have dunit and the revelations are all somewhat far-fetched. But none of that seems to matter. It's Christmas and entertainment needs to be jolly and undemanding, especially if it can be a little bit bloodthirsty too! Crimes on Centre Court, based on a story from the award winning podcast (#2 in iTunes fiction chart), toured to great acclaim in 2021 and is an ace of a show which you’re sure to (fifteen) love. This deucey treat will rally the spirits and leave you wanting a second serve-ing of the volley of gags and visual delights. You won’t see it game set and matched anywhere else. Henry Goodman was simply superb at Hercule Poirot, giving the best performance that I’d seen at the Theatre Royal Bath in many a year. This wonderful actor perfectly inhabited every mannerism and idiosyncrasy of the OCD detective with such subtle skill that it was a real joy to watch. From the pedantic way that the moves and simply takes a seat, to his perfectly pitched questioning of the suspects and wonder at his own skills, he is joy to watch, making this one of the most complete and entertaining portrayals of the great detective that you’ll ever see (sorry Ken, but you really should be taking notes…). This new production at the Theatre Royal did away with the Hollywood royalty and instead relied on a great screenplay, a perfectly cast lead and wonderfully creative scenery.
