I checked out this book from my local library for my four-year-old daughter who wanted a "scary" book, and the first thing that caught my eye was the excellent art work.They visit the museum, fly (if they have wings) straight up into the sky, splash in the fountain, scare people passing by, and talk of what they’ve seen and felt (the sun burning them, the rain pouring down on them, and the birds that perch on them that leave behind stains). This early chapter book gently reinforces the credo that ``with freedom comes responsibility''--even in the middle of summer vacation. PW enjoyed the ``witty and whimsical verses'' that tell the tale of a desert-dwelling duck who receives on his birthday water paraphernalia--and an inflatable pool in which to try them out.

The gargoyles' impish, grotesque grins-expressions just this side of malevolent-and ``empty eyes unblinking'' are not easily forgotten.
