In the book, he describes how his mother came to visit him in prison, and asked him about a Catholic man who had been killed by the Ulster Defence Association (UDA).

I grew up in a society were it was always somebody else's fault with nobody taking responsibility for their own actions.

After violent clashes between members of both groups on the Shankill Road the UVF shot and killed two men close to the UDA's West Belfast leadership, Jackie Coulter and Bobby Mahood. John Gregg, Brigadier of the UDA South East Antrim Brigade and, like Wright, a man with close links to far right groups in England, was also a strong critic of Hutchinson and accused him of thinking "like a republican". After his release in 1990, he was involved with Gusty Spence and others, in the peace process which led to the announcement, in October 1994, by the Combined Loyalist Military Command (CLMC) , of a ceasefire. I have read multiple detailed papers, articles and public contributions by those who say the deal cannot possibly achieve what it will purport to have achieved, but- as yet- I see nothing which commits any opposing view to writing, and opens it to scrutiny. The roots of Hutchinson's involvement lay three years earlier in the immediate aftermath of the killing of Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF) leader Billy Wright by the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA). He left school at fifteen with no qualifications and was imprisoned in Long Kesh (the Compounds at Maze and Long Kesh Prison) between 1974-1990.
