But is it a good story? The good news is that it’s a very good story indeed. Like most of Murakami's shorts it’s a tale to make the reader think. Very little really happens and I'm not giving much away – the beauty is in the flow of words put down by the writer – to say that it's about a young waitress who gets to make a single wish on her twentieth birthday. Good girl, who loves kink? Stop! We are NOT talking about me..... It's Jordan 👀 stop giving me those suspicious staresHe is playful yet vulnerable makes me want to take care of him, give him a massage when he gets off from his work, make him his favourite desserts, drive away his loneliness, do equally thoughtful stuffs he does for Jordan and people around him. Birthday Girl has a basic plot but it really lingers. A woman on her twentieth birthday is asked to deliver her boss’ meal to his rooms in the restaurant where she is a waitress. Seems ordinary, but after an odd conversation the man offers to grant her a wish, any wish, as her birthday present. We are never told what the wish is or if it has been granted, though the woman’s life did change afterwards. I don’t know if it’s a result of the wish or by the random places life can take us. Murakami leaves us in the dark. There’s something about forbidden romances/taboo topics that tests and pushes and makes you questions your original stances on it, whatever they may have been, and from whatever preconceived notions they may have originated from.

A common trait in all Murakami books is that you'll be left with more questions than answers. There is so much to be interpreted in the story. What was the girl's wish? Did it come true? Who is the narrator? Who was the owner of the hotel? Did he actually possess power to make a wish come true? This tiny story is open to so much interpretations that it blows my mind.I knew the moment his eyes were on me tonight when he walked in and I was at the juke box. I could see him out of the corner of my eye when I walked to the bar, too, and I know that look. Possessive." I guess the sex scenes were hot, except for the loofah scene! I mean I don't know what loofah's you use in the states, but here they are really rough and that shit would chafe! Ouch! Oh and the desk corner scene?!! WTAF?! The girl wasn't even meant to be working that night as it was her birthday, but two sudden illnesses mean that not only is she on duty, but she has to take up the meal. Unexpectedly she encounters the mysterious owner, who, learning it is her birthday, and oddly pleased by her kindness in bringing the meal (given a meal is brought to him every night) offers her a present:

I love the way the author dealt with this. It’s a sensitive issue and I felt that it was approached and told in a respectful way.

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't expecting anything highbrow about a smutty erotica novel where the girlfriend of this loser ends up falling for said loser's dad when the loser basically messes up his life and they all have to move in with Loser Sr. Loser Sr. had Loser when he was really young, so even though he's old, he's still hot. That's really important-- he's a Daddy, but a young Daddy. Me he sorprendido leyendo un libro de este género. Es mi primera vez leyendo a la autora, y una novela considerada #darkromance. Sin embargo, y pese a la sensación agridulce que me ha dejado tras terminarlo, creo que ha sido una buena opción para adentrarme en el género. Dicho esto... A forbidden fruit, a romance filled with angst, and the struggle of battling your inner thoughts of the forbidden and desires, making your craving enhance more and more for Pike and Jordan...

In the introduction to that book Murakami says that he felt inspired to add a story of his own and since none of the stories I had assembled focused on the birthday of a young girl, I chose my character more or less consciously to supply that missing element. (per Rubin's translation). The result was this story. The original can be found in various magazines e.g. Harpers ( https://harpers.org/archive/2003/07/b...) and was also included in the later collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. Long story short they play house, fall in love and live happily ever after in a suburban neighbourhood with a pool. so this book starts where she is dating the love interest son (i know! HIS SON IS THE SAME AGE AS HER! ) And something happens where they break up and Pike (aka the dad/love interest) takes her in because she has nowhere to go at all. And then we get to see how a grown ass man is attracted to a child *shudders* I cannot with this book. El final es muy abierto y te hace pensar en cuál es el papel del narrador, pues el cuento está narrado desde dos tiempos narrativos y con dos narradores diferentes.

As much, as Jordan annoyed me, she had so far had a shit life, and had been treated like dirt by all of the men in her life, including Pike a few times. I personally think that girl should spend some time on her education, making friends, and to well grow up a little bit, like most 19 year olds. I didn't like Jordan. She was meant to be portrayed as this mature and somewhat perfect girl, but she actually did act her age of 19, and sometimes younger. I found her whiny and annoying, with her tantrums and strops! It was meant to be written that she was mature because of the things she had been through, but it didn't really work. She was an immature girl, who had been through some stuff.
