I like the way that libraries do that sometimes; they give you the things that you did not quite mean to get and yet knew you always wanted.

At least The New York Review of Books has done parents and kids a huge service by bringing out these beautifully printed and illustrated editions of classics that do not deserve to be forgotten. I first read this many years ago and recently re-purchased at the ripe old age of 51, for the sheer pleasure of re-reading one of my all time favourite books. Rosemary has just broken up for the summer holidays, and as every English child knows, those particular six weeks off school in the summer feel as if they will never end.

Cantrip cast on him is undone, and so Rosemary, together with her friend John, have to learn a little witchcraft and track down Mrs. There is some magic (not too much) while the cat and his human friends (two ten-years children) try to undo the spell of the witch against her cat. I didn't notice when I first read them, but it's obvious now from the illustrations that there's a biggish time gap between the first and third books. This was fun for a read aloud, and we enjoyed the relationship between John and Rosemary, who despite being from different backgrounds were really good friends. It's when I learned the word "widdershins" which I've almost never seen since (and spell check doesn't recognise) and is a great way to learn about other times and cultures. Nesbit came back into print; Edward Eager began his novels that started with Half Magic; Mary Norton had her series of Borrowers books; and C.Of course I didn't find the series as magical as when I was 10 years old, but still felt it was well written and an enjoyable way to pass the time. Read individually, or in sequence, Barbara Sleigh's fantastic and fantastical trilogy casts an unforgettable spell. Cats (albeit non-speaking ones) are also central to Sleigh's stand-alone novel No One Must Know (1962), about children hiding a cat and her kittens from a landlord who has banned pets.

Carbonel is frustrated because his son Calidor, now a rebellious adolescent, has rejected his planned marriage and run away from the Falllowhithe cat kingdom. His other favorite cat characters were Dumpsie (a she-cat raised in the town dump and favored by Prince Calidor) and Woppit, Calidor's and Pergamond's "nanny" cat. Carbonel was also one of the first books to represent a low-income, struggling single-parent family. She befriends John and then she and John set about gaining Carbonel his freedom from the witch's spell and have many adventures along the way.But along the way Rosemary and her friend John must do some clever sleuthing, work a little magic of their own, and—not least— put up with the demands of a very haughty cat. The three books are too good to be forgotten, so kudos to the New York Review for reprinting them in its Children’s Collection.

If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind. I loved reading about how she (and her new friend, John) go about discovering the right steps and tools to get the job done . But in the third book, the issue makes even less sense, and then the book uses the exact same sort of ending! The sky tops of London become star scrapers of if you look the right way, the side of your eye when a tree branch is sinister and a cloud more than. Carbonel: the King of the Cats is a children’s fantasy book by Barbara Sleigh, which was first published in 1955.When Rosemary meets Carbonel, a cat prince, and agrees to help him gain his rightful place as king, it sparks a wonderful adventure filled with witches, magic and talking cats - just the kind of thing I always yearned to happen to me as a child.
