Glenmorangie Signet Single Malt Scotch Whisky earned the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2009, 2010 and 2011, and earned a score of 95 points from Wine Enthusiast. Like almost everything at Glenmo, they start by filling approximately 270 toasted wine barrels with a 10+ years old spirit, but this time it’s not the OG 10, but one containing the chocolate malt. The whisky stays in those toasted barrels for at least 2 years. During this time the angels take their share and it gets down to about 167 full barrels worth of whisky which gets dumped into a blending tank. For those who aren’t Glenmo lovers, this gives folks something other than the usual bright and fruity whisky. It’s something deeper and darker to sink into and that has an appeal to a certain group of drinkers. Though no matter how you feel about Glenmo, and even if you hate this, I think we can all agree on the Glenmorangie Signet being one of the most unique whiskies/profiles in the world of Scotch. Glenmorangie is among, the oldest and finest scotch whiskey in the world. It was founded by William Matheson in 1843, but the company says that it has been producing alcohol since 1703. Glenmorangie Price in India Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. The title says a lot about my reaction. I was stunned by the nose. It was... smokey? Like a gentle Islay peatiness...? (Think of the more mild pours of Bunnahabbain) What? In a Glenmorangie?? A hint of sweetness I couldn't place, but not quite the raisins and cocoa described in the notes. Certainly not the signature Glenmorangie sweetness I'm used to. Is the subtle smokiness I got, the "toasted..." described in the notes? It didn't seem near as subtle as "toasted," but okay. It's certainly not actually petty. But it was such a bold start.

After being dumped, mixed and allowed to briefly marry, the whisky is put into a variety of wine and sherry barrels where the whisky sits for at least 6 months, but up to 3 years. Finally, those wine and sherry barrels get dumped and blended together. Unofficially the whisky hovers around the 15-year mark, but no age is ever put on the bottle because they’re going for a flavor profile, not a number.

The roasty notes in this make it stand apart from everything else Glenmo does, and that’s a good thing here. Cocoa, vanilla, butterscotch, dark fruit leather, malt, Dots, tropical fruit, orchard fruit, citrus peels and spice. It’s not what you typically think of when you think Glenmorangie, and I think that’s why Signet has such a huge following both within the hardcore Glenmo fans and the larger whisky-loving audience. For Glenmo lovers like myself, the Signet shows us more facets of what can come out of the distillery when the malt and casks are changed up; a drinkable glimpse into an alternate reality.

(“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. There’s no right or wrong way to drink whisky. As long as you enjoy it, that’s all that matters. But there are some techniques that can heighten the experience of drinking whisky, making it even more pleasurable.
