Savages has got to be the same book that I remember from fifteen years ago, the plot is the same. But, the writing style and the details as the plot is fleshed out are so very different than I remember! The male characters tended to be sterotypical but you expect an author to have greater insight into characters of the same gender. Conran delivered on the female side, and I got very attached to the five fictitious women she created.In the end, what becomes clear is that the "savages" are NOT the natives, who want generally only to live their lives as they always have, but rather the oil companies and their allies, who are all too willing to chew up and spit out anyone or anything that gets in their way. I do wish the author was even more explicit about that point, though every reader who chooses and makes it through this book will certainly get it. The famous characters Frankie Machine and Booby Z make an appearance in here from Don Winslow's other novels. Bobby Z is featured more in the past than Frankie Machine who is just mentioned briefly. Rachel Saint was the sister of one of the speared missionaries, and she continued to pursue his work. One of her first native converts, Toña, became a preacher. But in their greedy rush to claim the prize, the men fail to take into account a rapacious general, who takes control of the island in a military coup and brutally executes all of them. With the movie adaptation of Savages coming out in the summer of 2012, Ben Chon and O is going to be a household name and great time in the authors career.
