Humza Arshad (pictured) is the first British YouTuber to have his own scripted comedy series on BBC Three in the mockumentary series Coconut. It is 352 pages that remind me of the the My Teacher is an Alien book series of my youth smashed up with the Weirder School/Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of today.

I read Roald Dahl, Harry Potter but maybe if I had found a book with an Asian kid on the cover I might have read more because I would have found books I could relate to. The hilarious Humza Arshad, of Diary of a Badman fame, speaks to us about his new book Little Badman, the difference between writing comedy for adults and children, and the importance for children to see themselves reflected in the books they read. In his world people are from lots of places and they all live and play and learn together and they eat caramel apples and toffee and jilabies.

It was a lot of fun working together on Little Badman, we have the same sense of humour, but he's a lot better at spelling then me! I don’t know if you’ve ever seen any war movies, about Vietnam or Iraq or the Galactic Empire, but none of that compares to what I went through in my final year at school. I am thinking about getting the others in the series for my class next year to read if they want too.I kind of like that they are Muslim kids and it appeals to a larger audience, sure something praying or something at some point might have been nice, but it isn’t a book that you’d be expecting spiritual nuggets from, so it is ok. I think my favorite character is Grandpa, who Humza has to learn to appreciate and not just see as an old almost dead guy and Humza’s dad who exaggerates everything and takes his cricket very seriously. However, Humza and his friend Umer and Wendy realise that something is not quite right so they band together to get to the bottom of this mystery. On 9 and 10 July 2013, he was involved in a live shows of Smokey's Barbers at the Pavilion Theatre, Festival Square for the Manchester International Festival. In September 2010, Arshad created comedy web series Diary of a Bad Man, revolving around video diaries of a young man with the "mentality of a seven-year-old".

This book is hilarious and my class adored it, Humza is a brilliant narrator who adds humour throughout. Little Badman and the Time-travelling Teacher of Doom is an action-packed, hilarious and clever adventure story that will keep children hooked to the end. Can the two boys successfully travel through time and avoid The Agency, and the world as they know it, from being completely destroyed? As such, it comes heartily recommended for 8+ year-olds who want to be wildly entertained by a cracking lead character, with sweetness coming courtesy of the theme of friendship, alongside the eponymous aunties’ sugary snacks. The second book, Little Badman and the Time-travelling Teacher of Doom, was published on 20 August 2020.The plot around the Agency and investigating Mr Malik may appear simple but is far from it as Humza and Umer discover and once it gets going their adventure doesn't stop until the final few pages. Humza (aka Little Badman) is an 11 year old boy who fancies himself as a rapper and, after saving the world from aliens in the first book, he is now intent on becoming a proper secret agent for 'The Agency'. It was always in the back of my head about what a younger Humza Badman would be like, what is his world like, his friends and everything around it.
