I always wind up coming back to it even after another hip hop album impresses me and nothing has topped it yet. The Steve Reich piece that's sampled at the beginning of America's Most Blunted was a favorite of Don Van Vliet.

Sam Samuelson of AllMusic wrote that album's strength "lies in its mix between seemingly obtuse beats, samples, MCing, and some straight-up hip-hop bumping" and that "MF Doom's unpredictable lyrical style fits quite nicely within Madlib's unconventional beat orchestrations". The LP, entitled Madvillainy, was recorded over the course of two years and released in 2004 via Stones Throw Records.

For the final version of the album, Doom altered his voice, described by Peanut Butter Wolf as going from "really hyper, more enthusiastic" to "a more mellow, relaxed, confident, less abrasive", and changed some lyrics to coincide with this change. Soon after release of the album, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Madlib stated that he wanted to collaborate with two artists: J Dilla and Doom. Doom's rapping hits the spot with me; I know some people have a problem with his lazy style but it fits perfectly with the music.

The songs are really short and when you first listen to them they might not stick right away, but they're full of ideas and creativity and I love that it just gets to the point. The sound is great, not much to add, there was nothing that really blew my shoes off compared to other media of this record besides the fullness of the bass tones and the silence of record which was good. While Madvillainy achieved only moderate commercial success, it became one of the best-selling Stones Throw albums.
