In his desire of breathe to life and energy into a building that would soon be gone, he created a picture that 60 years later is as vibrant and original as it was when it appeared behind the ground glass of his camera lens. Gigli's celebrity portraits included Sophia Loren (at age 21), Anita Ekberg, Marcel Duchamp, John F. Gigli took the photo in 1960, before a bank of brownstones across the street from his own Manhattan apartment was torn down. It has been estimated to be the most commercially valuable photograph and one of the most collected, on account of the great number of signed copies that have been sold at auction.

He wanted to preserve the memory of the distinctive brownstone houses across from his home studio that were slated for demolition. The final product proved to be something surreal, reducing the living, breathing women to brightly colored toys in a doll house.
