Though it may sound like a contemporary innovation, citrus gins like our Lemon Drizzle actually have quite the history here in London. Originating in the 1930s – and widely enjoyed by the 1950s and 60s – gin flavoured with lemon and orange was produced by several different distilleries in the Big Smoke. Our Lemon Drizzle Gin is made in homage to that lesser-known slice of spirits history…with our own Sipsmith twist, naturally. A gin & tonic with lemon as a garnish would be perfect with this lemon variation gin, but another fantastic option would be the Lemon Drizzle 75.Meet the newest addition to Sipsmith’s range of fine spirits: our deliciously indulgent Lemon Drizzle Gin – exclusive to M&S. The Lemon & Lime gin from Finders is a lively gin with a strong citrus tang. The key botanicals in this gin are lemon peel and lemon balm, anis seed, and pine needles. Warner’s Distillery creates a wide range of different kinds of gin and 0% gins. Aside from their London Dry and Harrington Dry, some standout flavored gins are Honeybee gin and Rhubarb gin. Both the Sicilian Lemon and the Lemon Peel variants are amazing options if you’re looking for a lemon-based variation to a traditional gin. It’s no wonder that, given its international popularity, the G&T has a number of different guises. When it comes to the eternal question of lemon versus lime, there are a few different takes on the matter. Those who argue for lime say the fruit, with its bright, punchy flavor, offers a boldness that lemon can’t match. However, many purists argue that the lemon is the only choice: as a more delicate fruit, it is less likely to overwhelm the bounty of a gin’s botanicals. Either way, Max Venning from Three Sheets advises bartenders to use a light hand: “There’s no need to squeeze the citrus over the drink. If you’re using a quality gin like Sipsmith, there’s no harshness that needs covering up.”

Brands are trying to be more innovative and are trying to keep up with the increasing demand for different kinds of gin. One of those new flavored gins is lemon based gin. Their range of gins consists of a dry gin, a master blend dry gin, a pomegranate gin, a cherry gin, and a mojito gin among a few other exceptional gins. Also, most gin liqueurs tend to be a bit sweeter than standard gins and they don’t need to be as juniper-forward as a real gin. Their blood orange gin is also an amazing, sweet variant to their classic dry gin, but that one’s maybe a little less known.

When I drank it

If you’re eager to sample Lemon Drizzle Gin for yourself, you can pop down to M&S, where it will be on the shelves from the end of September. But if you’re thinking that it sounds more than a little familiar, you’re also right: in fact, Lemon Drizzle Gin first made its debut in our inaugural Sipping Society (formerly known as the Quarterly Sipping Service) shipment, which was sent out last year. While their London dry gin was only crafted recently (later than the Lemon Grove gin), juniper notes are still present enough in the Lemon Grove gin to convince gin lovers to use this spirit for their gin & tonic. Gin and lemon make a perfect duo in this Sipsmithian take on iced tea. Paired with chilled Earl Grey tea and a fruit-forward garnish, this serve is like no other iced tea you’ve ever had before. Designed for al fresco sipping. Especially pine needles are a botanical not often found in gins, but it makes a great earthy peppery addition to the gin.
